I have the chance to buy a 1980 F100 4x4 for $2000cdn. There are only two issues with this truck that worry me. First the engine has a knock, it's not a severe one, it goes away under light load and is most pronounced at idle. The other is that the clutch, even though it has new z bar bushings it is still stiff to push, if I take the rod from the z bar to the release lever off it makes it all better. It's so bad that the body lifts up Does anyone have any ideas? I want this truck but I want to know what I'm getting into.
The clutch issue is bad cab mounts.... The Engine, well, could be bearings....
That is way too much for a 1980 with such issues, unless the body is absolutley mint, the truck has fairly low KM's, and, it's saftied....

The body is MINT!! It comes with new 33's and a set of new 235's for winter tires. My shop teacher said it could be the pivot ball in the tranny, it may be broken and the fork is pivoting on the what's left. Why would bad cab mounts be causing this??
I have to agree with Bigreave and 82, it's too much for that year model with a bad motor. (could be wrist pin, could be a rod). What I think 82 was talking about is the body-moving issue. But, on an '80 model f100 your linkage hooks up from the pedal to the frame then to the bell housing. Yes, if one of those split bushings are worn out it can be the devil to push. However, if they've been worn out for a long time, then the ***** may be worn beyond repair - saw many of them like that. That "Z" bar is fairly easy to remove. Remove it and check out the ***** that the split-bushings ride on. Even though the bushings are new and the ***** are worn it still crowds the lever.
How many miles are on it?
The cab moving is either the pivot ball bushings, or, collapsed cab mounts throwing the linkage's geometry off. I've had both problems, and the cab mounts are what make it lift the cab.
Personally I'd be leary of it being a 4x4 F100, either the seller isn't that knowledgable and it's an F150, or it has been converted to 4x4, 4x4 F100's were last built in 1977. If it is indeed a F100, I suggest you go over it with a fine toothed comb and see just what else had been done to it.

I think they are asking a little much for the truck. Those problems you've listed can and probably will (the motor anyway) come out and cost you some money so unless you can get him to come down in price to 1500 or less i would find something else cause believe me there are lots of those trucks around (F-150s anyway).
My buddy is selling his 83 f150 for 900. Has a Straight six with Mantran. If you every feel like driving to Kansas City, Missouri. I could talk him down to 600 for you
Okay, 96,000 miles is not that bad - if it's true miles. Still, I would have someone depress the clutch while you take a look at that linkage. Make sure the frame bracket and/or the bell housing bracket is not moving (missing or loose bolts). Then see if the "Z" bar is floating or drifting. Personally, this is a minor problem. The main problem for me is the engine knock at 96,000 miles. I bought my '83 two years ago for $750 and all it needed was lockouts and a brake booster.
