I don't think unplugging it would damage it, but they can gum up over time.
I plugged it back in and it made no difference when I started my truck. I guess pulling the minder out and cleaning it is pretty simple and straight forward?
The minder is either open or closed circuit and is NO Normally Open. Simply jumping the wire pins closes the circuit and the lamp on the cluster displays.
Can be used with a LED on dash for non-equipped vehicles. Done many of them.
The Minder is only a few $$ on-line.
****** HOWEVER, they are primarily for the maintenance challenged individual. In other words, performing proper maintenance by changing / cleaning the filter should be performed regardless of its position. Suggest NOT using it as a maintenance indicator unless it activates the dash indicator at which time I would immediately stop the vehicle to prevent damage.

I check my filters on a regular basis and don't rely on the minder, especially since it never moves. However, if something is attached to my truck I just want it to work, and work properly.
