Camshaft

I am looking to do a camshaft in truck as I am digging into do the timing set. I talked with my teacher and he said that there can be problems with the heads and bottom end but did not say anymore then that. I want to know what I put at risk by caming. I also want to know what all might have to be changed in order to make the cam usable in my truck. The truck has 130k on it and the cam I am looking at is a 204/214 at 050. Thanks for the help

I'd need to know more specs on the cam. 204/214 @ 50 doesn't sound crazy but I'd need more info.

The bottom end/head thing I think he is referring to is what compression ratio the cam requires and wether the heads can flow the air.

The lift is a bit more than I expected, but not out of reason. The RPM range is slightly higher than I would have suggested as I like to have the range start at 900 or so, but 1200 isn't bad, and at least the top end is said to stop at 5k. And their statement of "Smooth idle, excellent low-end torque. Works well in stock engines and towing applications." is exactly what I would be looking for. Sounds good.

I agree with Gary here. Should be perfectly fine, though it does start a bit high. 800-900 as Gary said is the ideal number to shoot for.

With a flat-tappet cam you absolutely HAVE TO change the lifters as well. Each lifter mates with the cam lobe and if you pull them at some point they absolutely MUST go back with the same lobe or they will fail in short order. The rocker arms should be fine, as should the push rods, although check them for being straight by rolling them on a flat table. And, you said you were doing the timing set - that's a must as well.

Other than that, you should be good to go.

Stock springs are okay with the 3500.
That cam is way out of juice by 5k.
I wouldn't trust stock springs with the 3501.

While you have the rockers off it isn't too much of a stretch to replace valve seals, as these are usually brittle or gone by 100k

That too. That's what mine was after I blew the motor before the current one. Now its just a beater at the moment. That's why I love my RV cam. Builds power über low. But it's dead by 4500.

Factory idle speed is 800, I don't see much use in making power when the truck is off.

Mine idles at about 525 in drive. Anymore than that and it tries to overpower the brakes.

You check that with a real tach?
Maybe your converter is too tight?
IDK, all I do know is what my emissions tag says.
