Texas trivia

How about a trivia thread devoted to Texas related trivia? Might be fun.....

To kick it off: Who was the only male to survive the battle of the Alamo?

Although conflicting stories circulate, One man, Brigido Guerrero survived when he convinced Mexican officers he had been held prisoner.

Ok, on the subject of the Alamo,

According to legend, fort commander William Travis drew a line in the sand with his sword and asked all of the defenders who were willing to fight to the death to defend the Alamo to cross it: only one man refused. Who was he?

Well the story goes that Jim Bowie was too sick and asked to be carried across the line.

In actuality the line was probably never drawn as the first account of that appeared some 40 years after the battle.

Edit: Or were you looking for Louis "Moses" Rose who left the Alamo?

Nope, Bowie was who I read about being carried over. Probably right, It was a myth from later stories.

I should have been more specific in my question because they're were young males and civilian non-combatants that survived as well as those that left the Alamo.

There is a story that Brigido Guerreo (an adult and a combatant ) locked himself in a cell and survived but there is some controversy surrounding that account. I was looking for another man which is not as contested.

My guess is the Bowie story was made up to cover up the Rose story who allegedly refused to cross the line. Whether he did or not- he did refuse to fight and was allowed to leave. He was the only one who left for that reason. There were quite a few who left and survived but they were either scouts, or left for reinforcements or provisions.

Bowie was bedridden at the time and killed in his bed.

The beans feed wildlife and can feed livestock as well as can be used to make jelly. The wood is a beautiful hardwood for floors, furniture, and just about anything that you would use hardwood for. The biggest problem being finding long, wide boards. So you're off- just what have you been smoking?

Which brings me to the final reason I like the little things. While I use hickory, pecan, oak, plum, peach or apple - there are times when mesquite is the best choice for smoking meat.

Thanks for trying. Guess again. ..

I guess I'll just go ahead and answer this one (there's plenty more If this thread takes off). It's so funny how all this is kinda related so far. ....I thought for sure someone would get it with the mention of William B. Travis right off the bat!!!!!

William B Travis had a slave named Joe that fought bravely along his side until he fell. Joe then ran and hid in the chapel. For whatever reason- his life was spared and to my knowledge, this account was never contested.

Consolidation question: What does Alamo mean in Spanish?

The word in Spanish is poplar, a masculine noun.

I heard cottonwood. Being that the two trees are very similar in appearance, I'll call that one good.

It's not juniper.
