Had the trailer tongue pop off the ball and crunched my tailgate like a toaster. Truck is a 2005 model. Looking for some advice on a replacement.
1) Will a 2008 or newer Superduty tailgate fit on these trucks ? The superduty logo on the tailgate is a nice touch.
2) Anyone had any luck using a rear camera on the latch ?
3) I was able to find a reproduction but there is mixed reviews. If anyone has any contacts where I could find a replacement or feedback on a reproduction would be appreciated.
Cheapest solution is a take off or from a wrecked truck at a yard, even in the same paint color. Next best, FOrd OEM and get her painted up. Next best aftermarket, auto body shops may have mixed reviews but this is a lot more economical. A good body shop will do their best to make it come out nice. You can do the camera in all of these options, but I don't have one so can't common.

1) yes
2) yes, someone here on the forums hooked it up and had it working on IIRC a Pioneer Head Unit
3) It's a tailgate, reproduction will be fine. I would buy one off of craigslist LONG before I would use a generic one though. You can get the 08+ around here for about $400-600.
There's only 2 good things about the 08s that I can think of off the top of my head.
1. Tailgate is nice
2. Mirrors are nice
The great thing is the will both fit.
IMO with these on an 05-07, you get the best looker of all
I'll add one more to jswartz84's list that I like, is some of them came with the handle/step option. I also like the Super Duty imprinted in the gate. As I get older I don't quite hop up in the bed like I used to...
Aftermarket sheet metal SUCKS. PERIOD. Do some shopping and find an OEM that you like, even if it has some dings. Do NOT let your insurance company force you into anything you don't want. And FWIW--all the hardware comes piece by piece. You can't get a tailgate assembly new.
Personally, I like the look of the stock tailgate from your (our) truck over the 08. Don't much care for the oval in the middle, but that's just me.
Whatever you decide, the recking yard would be your best bet, finding a color match being ideal. IMO, the back end of the truck would be less likely to be damaged and I'd imagine you should have good luck finding one in good shape, 05 or 08, whichever.
Lots of times they won't sell a tailgate separately from the bed if it's good, just like finding a hood separately.....just hardly ever happens in the body business. It's always worth looking for though.

Tailgates are everywhere on Craigslist. The problem is finding my color... I believe people remove them for fifth wheel tailgates?
Thanks for all the feedback. I'm not going through insurance, I'll just have to eat this one. Luckily it was only the tailgate.
Other question is will the current lock handle fit in an '08 or newer ?
Sounds like too much risk to go with aftermarket. Assume you probably get what you pay for. Its still functional and managed to pound it out so doesn't look to bad. The hem is all pulled apart so its not worth fixing.
I got the local wrecking yard looking for one, see what they come up with.
About a year ago there was a big Tail gate theft in many states just make sure theres no Engraving on it anywhere, Truck trader, farm and Ag news I would Even make a post in FTE Market Place.
I've been on the hunt for the 08+ tailgate for a while now in my area. The step gates usually for for about 800 for a new take-off, and the step gate + camera is usually 1,200 for a new take-off. I've seen non-step non-camera gates for about 300-400 in new-take off though. Problem is there's not an aftermarket for the 08+ because the Super Duty lettering is trade-marked by Ford. I want the step gate badly, but it's not worth 500 bucks to me. 500 bucks will buy a lot of other nice goodies, plus I usually just step on tire and hop into the bed since I'm 28 still. lol
If you can settle for an 03 - 07 Super Duty tailgate, and are fairly close to Reno, here's an 03 for $400. (Not sure what shipping would be for one of those, if not commutable)
