Heater boxes same across the years?

The blower motor for the heater box in my 76 is making lots and lots of noise, and everything smells like coffee because some spilled.

I've got a fully "restored" heater box that I did up for my 79. New core, gaskets all around, etc etc. The only difference is the 79 has the extra heating core while the 76 does not.

Other than that minor difference, can I just swap the two out? Since I'm going to be tearing the dash apart, I just want to double check before I dive into it.

Thanks
Jameson

It will fit. The "high output" heater housing is a little different internally, that's to accommodate the larger heater core. On the outside they're the same. Should be a bolt in.
Oh, you will need to add this to your dash though .

You can see where the differences are in the last picture lafermedave posted, the one where it looks like he's getting ready to fill his housing with coffee too .
See how the space for the heater core stops short of being the full length of the opening? This is a standard heater core.
With the high output option the space is the same size as the opening, it doesn't have that overlap.

That high output heater badge is neat. I wonder how mmuch more heat this will give compared to the smaller variant. I've only got a 300, so I'm not expecting too much. I remember with the 460 in the 79, when that thing warmed up to full temp, the heat coming out was pretty damn hot

Not a 100% sure but I believe the standard core is 6" long and the high output is 8".

Thanks David, I knew the HO was 8", it's listed in the parts catalog but they didn't give a dimension for the "economy" version (that's what Ford calls it). On that one I was going on a very foggy 30 yr old memory from when I changed one in the Pumpkin back in the early 80's.

This is the standard (lafermedavid's photo). Notice the stop in the box, highlighted by the red circle

Now here is high output heater variant (actually my box ) Notice how there is no stop.

The the cores themselves. Standard

High output variant

If you want to look at a big heater core, find one out of a '67 - '72 chevy. A little old 350 can't keep up.
