Truck Newbie

Just got my first truck ever, 2012 F-350 Lariat. Sorry for the new guy question, but here it is.

In the truck there is a 4wd selector, but there is also an option to get out and manually lock the front hubs. Can someone explain what is the difference between the two? What happens if I only use the selector on the dash, and what happens when I manually lock the hubs?

Also I can pull the 4wd selector out of the dash to lock the differential, what does that do and when would I use all of these features?

Salesman had no idea, and I am finding conflicting discussions on the internet, so I am turning to the experts!

Thanks in advance.

Well the manual lock hubs are back up if the auto ever fails! And as far locking the rear Diff would be if your in a uneven terrain situation. or need the traction! I use my locking diff pulling my boat out! its a steep ramp covered in moss. so that's just in 2wd lol Hope that answers your questions a little.

THe owners manual only confirms that manually locking the hubs actually locks the hubs. It leaves out all the commentary.

The esof is nice but the manual hubs can be helpful in situations here you can't get it to lock in. Then you can get out and turn them.

You should manually turn them and drive them periodically to lubricate the inner workings. Just manually turning them will not engage the transfer case unless you turn the switch.

Manually locking them will lock the axle and spin the front driveshaft only. Good to do this once in awhile.

If you flip the switch on the dash to 4x4 High, it will engage automatically. In case this system ever fails, or like myself, you just want the peace of mind it wont, you can manually engage the hubs. This wont engage 4x4, but the front axle will be locked and good to go, then when you switch to 4x4 on the dash, it just engages the transfer case. In order to go into 4x4 Low, you need to be stopped and in neutral. This is a much lower gearing and you cant go very fast with it, but you will be able to pull down a house

Pulling out the **** engages the rear electronic locking differential. This is good if you dont want to engage 4x4, and just need to get out of some wet grass or something. I think it only works upto 15 mph but i could be wrong
