I could measure from anywere. Two measurements I was thinking of were height from the ground and from the top of the tire to the bed floor.

Good thoughts about not having it too high. With my overload springs, I will never get enough weight to worry too much.

From the ground to the top of the bed frame I had 41 inches. From the top of the tire to the top of the bed board I had 10 and 1/2 inches.

Tried uploading some pictures but my internet is painfully slow, sorry.

I thought if the top of the tire always clears the bottom of the bed, no matter what the load or spring compression, then it's high enough.

Flatbed details

Here are some pictures of the Giant Mfg. Co. grain bed that I restored.
The floor was 2x6 tongue and groove (TG) fir. Fir because it stands up to the weather for a very long time. A friend gave me TG yellow pine so I used that for the floor instead of fir.
The side boards were and are 1x4 TG fir. The stakes were and are oak. The frame beams I think were fir and I had access to some used fir beams.
All of the steel that goes crosswise were replaced. Looking underneath there are steel plates at a 45 angle between the long beams and the cross beams and are used to hold it together with bolts. I used special screws that bore a hole in the wood floor and in the steel underneath and tap the hole too.
I put this bed back together the same way it was. It is 6' 6" wide and 8' long on the outside. It is on my 1950 F-3. Patrick

Very nice! I'm in Oregon and will be using Green Douglas Fir. I'm holding off until our Son's wedding is done (next week) then I'll pickup the lumber and start shaping, sanding, and finishing.
