Who knows? You might get lucky and find a replacement for your project.
I am subscribed to this thread, so I am notified when a new post is made. Keep the questions coming. Maybe the thread will be resurrected and more information will follow.

Great write up!

I had another thought about this.
Have either of you tried LMCtruck.com? This is from a quick search for your '89 Ranger:
Truck Parts and Truck Accessories
KRnoir, you didn't mention your vehicle info, but you might want to give LMCtruck a try. You never know. You folks might find something you didn't know you needed.
Good luck. Let us know what you find. Have either of you created a "Build Thread" or similar for your projects?

Well actually....
the holes that are torn up in my headliner, I can poke through to the metal ceiling - no cardboard - but there is a thin layer of a thicker fabric. Then around the visors towards the front it's definitely molded, so there has to be something more substantial back there. I guess I'll just have take the molding etc. off and see what comes down.
So all that 1/4 "fiberglass" type foam backing behind the fabric - when I take off - ideally shouldn't something else go back there besides just fabric? Not that I care too much but it's definitely gonna be thinner and less sound absorbent?

Yeah, the backerboard helps keep the material up there and out of the way. You could always take the old one out carefully, and try to trace a new backerboard. Some folks have done that for the Mustangs on one of the other sites I belong to for that interest.
I'll see if I can find the headliner project write-up and paste a link here for you. That way, you can review it to see if that would be something you want to attempt.

This is from a post from 2012:
"go to any sign shop and ask for some coruplast (spelling?) it's corrugated plastic (much like cardboard) that is lightweight, fairly strong, and CHEAP. did mine with this over 2 years ago, and it's still holding up well."
Haven't found the one I was looking for, yet, but I'm still looking.
