5th Wheel Towing
No problems at all towing (I keep it at 65MPH). The ride is smooth and no problems stopping etc. I do have the airbags, running at 65PSI empty, and the camper package and I do not hit the overload springs. I also have bulletproofed the engine and run the lowest SCT towing tune with the jakebrake option enabled, and have the tow/haul mode turned on.
My 2 cents worth...
1) Yes you will be over the GCVWR if, IF the trailer is completely loaded
2) The triple axle will take a lot of weight off of the rear axle, if you look at the spreadsheets that are available on the forum you will see that with airbags 4300lbs is the payload capability so you are fine on payload.
3) Depending on the state, the non commercial CDL might be required, but MOST states do not require this. (I think that only NE states and California require this)
4) If you plan ahead and look beyond the hood of your truck you will have no problems pulling or stopping.
5) Finally, since our rigs are so much alike, let me know if you have any other questions.
Buddy
I was supposed to meet the Guy to Look at the Trailer again on Saturday but then He went and sold it out from under me on Friday Evening... Funny thing is, He set-up the day and time for Us to meet. I wanted to go sooner!!!
As far as the slider in a short bed, I think that is a very good idea, personally. But if I was going to buy a hitch all over again, I'd go with a manual slider instead of the super glide that I bought. Reason being is that I go to places where I may need to hook up at an angle, rather than in line with the trailer. The super glide (auto slider) is an awesome hitch going down the road and negotiating tight areas because I don't even have to think about clearing the back of my cab, but for setting my trailer in tight spots (like I tend to do at least once per year) it is troublesome. Only because I sometimes don't have a spot big enough to leave the needed runway in front of my trailer to unhook. The truck and trailer needs to be less than 16 degrees pivot to hook and unhook with a super glide.
If you don't camp in tight places, then this issue isn't a concern for you. Just thought I'd throw it out to you for your consideration.
We travel fairly light so were within spec.
Our 6.0 pulls this load just fine on the flats and hills aren't an issue either.
I don't have airbags on my truck but I'm considering them.

However, My buddy has a 38 1/2' toy trailer that measures 41 1/2' actual, end to end, with a 17,500 gvw.
For me to pull that trailer, I would have to do it totally empty.
My buddy, by the way, pulls his trailer with a dually diesel, although, not a Ford.
Just like the other's said, do the math first.
