We have a 2012 F250 with the 6.7 Powerstroke King Ranch 2WD with the 10,000lb GVWR. (GCWR is 23,500)
We just bought a Heartland Bighorn 5th wheel with a dry weight of 12,144 and a hitch weight of 2,320. GVWR is 15,500.
We are having a 16K Powerglide hitch installed for it. (probably weighs 200lbs)
Kind of too late now, but do you think my truck will have a problem with this trailer?
I figure we would load at most 2000 in the trailer(fluids, stuff, etc)
I have a gas F250, and it seems to be better with more weight. I have no problem with mine weighing in at 18,900 lbs with trailer and golf cart in the bed. You have the diesel and the motor will have no problem at all. You may see a little sag but a set of air bags would fix that.
I have a 5th wheel with 15,5k gvwr and 2950 hitch wgt...
Only issue I have is too much rear sagging and am over on the rear gawr...
fixing that by rearranging weight in 5er to put a lot of 'stuff' my wife HAD to have behind the 5er axles
Then scheduled to get bags this week and should be good to go !
Amazing how that 6.7 handles that much weight in every way - starting, stopping, turning !!!
kevin !
is that yellow lettering on the rear ?!? Does it stay on well ? and source ?
You won't have any problem at all, especially having the diesel. There are plenty of people using theirs to tow trailers that size and even bigger. Only thing you might want to do is add a set of air bags to reduce the sag.
air bag it. need to get true empty and loaded wt. go to the local truck stops. Most have the cat scales that can do each axle and then give you the combined.
Sorry about not mentioning the set up.
It is a Crew Cab short bed.
Sounds like I will probably want to get air bags. Recommendations?
Thanks.
David
No problem, we are just trying to help !

Yours is similar to mine then - See my first cat scale that showed I loaded up VERY poorly ands was 4-500 lbs over on rear axle gawr?
and how it squats with my load ? but it still towed superbly !!!

You have a beautiful rig!
I will be sure to get everything weighed after we pick up the trailer next Friday
I am a bit intimidated by the truck stop scales I see, but I'll try to overcome that.

The lettering is yellow. I got it last year about this time and that's when I put it on on, then it was 20 degrees out. Have not had any problems with it peeling off. No the problem I have is I want to change it and not sure if it will come off.
Don't worry about the scales, I was the same way my first time. Try to go on a slow day, maybe afternoon during the week. Right now your just going off published numbers, it sure is nice to know exactly what you have.
I can't see anything wrong for the set up accept the hitch isn't enough for the trailer especially if your load is just a bit off and turns out to be heavier then what you thought.
I would opt for at least a 18K if not 20K+ hitch just so you don't have a potential weak link.

Yes, I think you made a serious mistake. You bought too much trailer for that truck. Now, you can make it work, and I do not think it is unsafe. But you will be over the truck GVWR and RAWR everywhere you go. With luck you won't get stopped and weighed. But what if you do? What if there is an accident and you are found to be overweight?
I say these things not to scare you, or shame you, but as information to others who may face this choice in the future.

There is always legal limit, safety limit and comfort limit.
Your truck is probably 7000 lb empty, so if you load your trailer up to 15,500 lb you are still below your 23,500 GCWR. and have 1000 for your own weight and passengers.
GCWR is not enforced anywhere BTW.
Superduty are build strong and they can take safely more then the ratings, what gives you even bigger safety margin.
Now how good driver are you is only for you to know.
Good luck and have fun.
X2 on the Firestone bags. Easy installs and are tough. If you tow a lot the on oars compressor is so nice, I just flip the switch and off I go. Plus adjust on the fly with road conditions so you don't bounce to death.
