Ignition circuit / resistor problems

Hey guys,

I have a 72 highboy with a 360 and have been having some trouble with the ignition recently. So if you have a minute I'll start from the beginning

So, started running really rough one day, missing like crazy, was looking around in the engine then all of a sudden the cab was full smoke. After a slight panic of turning key off/grabbing fire extinguisher/ disconnecting battery things cooled down with nothing actually catching fire.
So looking into it, found PO had cut Pink resistor wire after connector (outside of firewall), tapped into a light blue wire (attached to same connection at ignition switch) to run an external resistor (reads ~3 ohms) to the coil and starter relay. He also had a wire going to a tach before the resistor. Not positive that his setup was correct, or it might have had one bad connection, cause wire burned up all the way to the ignition switch.

So i took the tach out of the system and re-wired everything else with a new resistor (1 ohm, was what i had and figured it was closer to the stock measurement, havent measured voltage across coil yet) but engine is still hardly firing on any cylinders, barely runs.

Also, PO put in a mallory dual point, i accidentally broke one the posts on the coil (think it was a higher output coil for the dual point) so i threw the original back on. I have another used coil as well but not positive that either of these are good. I have original dizzy i can throw on too

Sorry if this is too much,
main questions are
1. Are the dual points still going to work with stock coil?
2. Is there any way to check coils to see if they're good?
3. What is actual resistance in circuit supposed to be (I've read/heard 1.3-1.4 ohms)
4. What is actual voltage at coil supposed to be? (I've read/ heard ~7 volts)
5. Any ideas why my setup wouldn't be working? As far as I can tell wiring is back to stock just using resistor instead of resistance wire

Yes a stock coil will work with dual points.

Yes, you should be able to read the resistance across the + and - terminals after you take the wires OFF the coil. Can't read resistance with wires on the terminals.

Typically the voltage at the coil should be around 9V while running.

I would swap distributors to a known good one(stock?) and see if things improve. Could be the points are bad/out of adjustment or the condensor is bad in the dual point version. Have you inspected the points? Have you checked the gap on each set?

I thought coil should be seeing 7 to 8 volts with the switch in the run position. Depends on which coil you use though. Some have the resistance built in to them so you would want 12v at the coil. But in either case I think it was the ignition switch that caused your problem. If I am correct neither dizzy set up will run good untill you change it. Original ignition switches caused exactly what you described. That is why the raplacement has different terminals and comes with a wiring pigtail to adapt it to your truck. Part number is D1AZ11572C. Still available from Ford.
BTW, if the coil you use does need to see the lower resistance I would buy a new resistance wire and go back to original. Part number was COLF12250A. It's cheap. Call these places to get the best deal. There are more if you need. Let me know.

Check that stock Dizzy 1st make sure it isn't worn out. May be why PO changed it. Check shaft in housing tightness, drive gear, Points breaker plate, etc. That D1AZ11572C is a replacement for a bunch of vehicles. Including Bumps. I still say think about putting the resistance wire back in there.

IMO, once you get a good distributor, install a Pertronix points replacement unit. Remove the resistor and run it. Put their coil on it also.

The only way I've ever seen it serviced is in the part number switch I posted above. Buying the switch and pigtail separate will probably be more expensive than just buying the Ford one From a Ford dealer.
You might try your local parts stores. Painless wiring sell you one maybe?
