1972 351W Wiring

Hey guys, I've got myself a 351W from a 1972 Ford Galaxy.

The engine was mounted in a 1978 F150, so it's not the original motor by any means.

I could use some help determining exactly what's going on with all my wiring because I'm 100% sure that it's a farmer-hack-job waiting to catch fire under my hood.

Here are some photos (working my way from the connection at the firewall to the rest of the engine where the problem lies):

Here is where my problem lies....

Whatever the hell this is... I know this aint correct...

Wanna give me some feedback? I know whatever that white thing (looks like a fuse holder) is... it ain't correct.

I'd like to correct everything as best I can.

I don't know what they are using it for on your truck, but that looks like a ignition coil feed resistor. Ford used a special resistance wire built into the harness, but if that went bad, someone may have used this external white resistor instead. Follow the wires from it, if one of them goes to the coil + terminal, then that's what it is, and it's important, it won't run without it.

Glad to see you're still posting on the small block forums. I've tried reading through old threads, but I don't think anyone has come across any engine this badly hacked up before.

The second last photo I posted up shows the ignition coil on the intake. The green wire with the yellow tape saying (neg) goes to the negative side of the coil (I think). That's just how I labeled it because the coil is very old (OEM) and so are all of the wires, so it's very hard to tell what's what. So I could be wrong, it COULD be the positive side of the coil.

Anyways, I've tried unplugging the "resistor" from my inner fender, and you're right... the truck won't run without it.

What's the proper way to get that all wired up? I'd really like to get rid of that set-up because it looks dangerous... so it probably is...

They used the resistor for a reason, I suspect because the original harness failed. Unless you have a source for a new original harness, or a good used one, you will have to patch what you have.

I don't see anything dangerous, everything you have shown should be fed from the main fusible link over at the starter solenoid(hopefully the fusible link is still there) so it shouldn't cause a fire, the fusible link will open up. But I do see butt splices, which are prone to corrosion problems.

What I would do if I were you is look on ebay or somewhere for a factory wiring diagram for your truck. You can probably find one on FORDification.com - The 1967-1972 Ford Pickup Resource also, but a large factory diagram may be better. I would then go to radio shack and get a soldering iron, solder, a some shrink tubing. I would then study the diagram, get familiar with what everything does, and then repair the harness, getting rid of the butt splices and instead slip a piece of shrink tubing over the wire, the soldering the wires, and then putting the shrink tubing over the solder joint and shrinking it. This will leave you a good looking reliable splice in the wire.

I've got myself all the electrical tools you've listed.

Never thought to look on Fordification. Thanks for the info and link.

I'll see what I can do and go from there.

Fordification has the diagrams, but sometimes they are hard to read. Let us know if you need any help understanding something.
