Ididit steering column and linkage issues

Hi guys. I've just discovered that my universal joint linkage system has been welded up and apparently that is a bit of a no no. I recently bought a 30" Ididit column with a DD end and my first discovery was that the old shaft was a 3/4 round one. I bought a Flaming river universal FR1707DD

thinking that would solve the problem. It fitted the new column, but the other end was only one inch and no way of securing it to the round shaft. So, obviously I bought the wrong thing. Further investigation then revealed the rest of the shaft down to the steering box has been welded together.

It's a mustang II front end with a Pinto rack. I guess the only way to remedy this is to rip it all out and start again?

Get a DD to DD U joint, a length of DD stainless intermediate shaft and a DD to Pinto(?) rack U joint from Borgeson, and replace the whole shebang.. You do not need nor should you use an intermediate shaft support unless you have 3 or more U joints in the setup, then use a support immediately after the second (counting from the column) and after any additional U joints.

Thanks guys. I might be able to reuse that support mount, unless whole thing has been welded in. There's a performance parts open day in the city where I live next week, so I might rip the old one out, take it down and match something up.

Can I just ask one quick question. Once you take the grub screw out, shouldnt the old column just pull through?

No idea what a grub screw is? When you say you can reuse the support, I hope you meant for something other than your steering connection?

Lol! I would have told you what a grub screw was, but that's the only name I know it by.
Yeah, I went out there again tonight. Wish I did normal working hours. Pitch black again and the air is full of fricken mosquitoes, so didnt stick at it for long.
Still couldn't get that shaft out, but am now convinced its not welded now, just tight as all hell. I was gonna attack it tonight but it's 9pm and the neighbours are kinda sensitive to angle grinders going off at night, and I am
fresh out of cutting discs for the dremel, otherwise I would have hit it with that. (bit quieter)
I think easiest way is approach with a dremel from the top and cut the old shaft out of there. Since it has all been welded, probably the only thing I can do?
Anyway, chatted to a guy from Borgeson. He had a look at the setup and recommended
013449 ¾”-36 X ¾” DD rack joint (assuming its a 36 spline off a power assisted pinto)
014949 ¾” DD X ¾” DD center joint
014952 ¾” DD X 1” DD column joint
409418 18” length of ¾” DD shaft OR 409436 36” length of ¾” DD shaft
Pretty much what we thought.
Thanks guys.
I'll keep you posted on how she goes

I think the rod end bearing unit is still pretty good. Has been welded into the chassis quite firmly and it accepts a 3/4 shaft. Unless I kill it getting the old shaft out...
I don't know what else to call it. It's a grub screw Heheh....

OK, Nathan tell me its a set screw, a recessed hex head short (pointed) bolt that is used to keep the U joint from slipping off the shaft. I learned something new!
If your connection uses 3 U joints then you will need an intermediate shaft support bearing. See the steering shaft design section of the Borgeson catalog for location preferences.
