Rearend/transfere case
I have an 89 5liter xlt. I changed every bearing in the rear end and the spider gears, I did not install a new preload thing a mabob. All the play is gone out of the rear end but I still have a howl, could it be that I don't have it set right or is the noise coming from the transfere case, 189,000 miles. The thing is mint in side and excellent out side. I repaird the rusty tail gate, the hood has a little cancer on the front and the roof has a crack over the drivers door, it's my first ford and I'm not disapointed.

How did the axles look? any pits where the axle bearings ride?
can you carefully raise and block the rear and run it up so some one can listen and pinpoint the location of the noise?

This problem has tormented me since last dec. that is when I changed the bearings. It was obvious that some one had worked on it before. I think they installed a new crown & pinion as the out side pinion bearing was wrong. When I put new side axcle bearing the right side leaked so I installed another and it also leaked so I then got a side-axcle from the junk yard and that cured that. Today I will take your sugestion and run her on blocks. Thanks !
