Setting the distribitor.

Hello all. I have done allot to my 94 ford 300 F150. Replaced the oil pump, new lifters, new push rods, new rockers. I cleaned all the areas. It was so caked up. That was my problem come to find out. I thought it was the oil pump as to why I kept losing pressure. It was just so gummed up oil had veins it was flowing thru and once in a while a pieces was breaking loose and clocking it up. Now everything is done I have to stick the distributor back in place. I found the mark on the harmonic balancer. Marked the 10 degree mark on the front of the truck. I can line it up and the rotor points 1 direction, the you can turn it 360 degrees and it points 180 from the last time. So how do I place the the distributor in the proper spot?

Thank you,

Jeff

Put cylinder 1 at top dead center on the compression stroke then put the distributor in.

You'll need to pull the spark plug out of your #1 cylinder then put your fingertip over the spark plug hole (not in, but over) while you turn the engine over. When the engine starts on the compression stroke, the air will start leaking out from under your finger. Stop turning the engine when your timing marks on the front of the engine are lined up.

I just set mine dead on and it usually will have the distributor set so that the plug wires for cyl's # 5 and 6 are at the front and #1 is about the 1 O'clock position. But yea put #1 piston at TDC of compression stroke first. I just went through that about 2 dozen times

Simple. Pull Spark Plug #1, rotate engine using rachet. Put your thumb over the spark plug hole, when pressure pushes your finger off the hole, you have the compression stroke of the engine, that is what you want. Then stop and look at the balancer, it will be nearing -0-, turn the engine to -0-, and drop in the distributor. The rotor should point directly at the #1 plug terminal on the cap. At this point your motor is at TDC and timing is at 0. Start it up, and get a timing light on it. Turn clockwise to advance timing.

Yeah, use a ratchet or get a buddy that can blip the key until your finger covering the spark plug hole gets pushed up. Not trying to take anything away from what was said above but I say that because it was really tough for me to turn the engine fast enough with a ratchet to feel air forced out...unless I was turning it from the bottom but then you cant reach the spark plug hole

You also want to make sure you're setting the timing to 0 degrees with the timing mark on the dampner and the degree gauge on the PASSENGER SIDE of the engine.

Once you complete that, remove the spout connector, start your truck and then set your base timing.
Turn engine off and reinstall the spout connector.

Life should be good then......

I would like to thank all of you for your help. Got a cylinder pressure gauge, found top dead center. Put the distributor in place. Started it right up. Just need to time it now.
