Is this normal?

Whenever I start my truck in the morning temps outside cold or warm, it takes my truck some time to run normal. The shift points are rough and shifting at real high rpm. 1st to 2nd about 3500rpm and it's a hard shift. Just wondering if it's normal.

Maybe if you try to romp on it @ 20 degrees and ECT is like 40.

Other than that you may have injector stiction to blame

I have that issue from time to time and it is related to the EGR valve being on the brink of being bad. Sometimes the EGR acts up on a cold morning and the truck acts that way. Of course I have an injector that sticks when it is cold and act similar. The shift points do not go that high when it stcks though.

You could try unplugging the EGR valve on a cold morning before you start it and see if there is a change.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but for the 6.0L, routine maintenance is crucial.

I was looking back on an old thread and saw that you hadn't replaced fuel filters in 25k miles. Now you are saying that you have never changed transmission fluid and external filter. From the APPEARANCES of the posts, it seems that you are not hitting the recommended intervals.

Fuel filters should be no more than 15k miles and tranny filter and fluid change/flush should be every 30k miles.

As was suggested, get the transmission flushed, change the filter, and then (IMO) get the codes read at a dealership.

Thanks for that I def need to be better at that. I started doing all the maint myself and it pays off learning a lot and cheaper. The trans fluid and filter is this going to be a long process. Also what fluid should I run. Is it just the same as changing the oil let it drain out and fill back up.

Do you have any gauges.... if not you should get a Scan Gauge II and check your FICM voltages. Can Not be lower than 46v before start, during start and AFTER start. Usually 47-49.5v.

Every 30k miles I drain and refill 3 times, with driving in-between to get the fluid mixed and heated up. I then change the external filter.

That being said, if you have gone a long time without a drain/fill or a flush, I would consider a flush at the dealership - assuming they had a heated flush machine.

Trans Fluid wont fix this But Better change it if its Been more then 30K

The Shift points are High Because an Engine Problem and your Using More Gas Pedal to get the Desired effect PCM Sees Higher Percent Gas Pedal Position and Adjusts shift point

Im with Mark on Fuel Filters

Its going to be engine releaited anyways why it runs Bad

It runs great after I get to around 45 then it all goes well even when a stop and go again. I am doing the trans fluid and filters tomorrow morning I will be doing the internal filter as well as external. Bismic you said you change it every 30000 miles fill and drain 3 times, are you getting the trans fluid three different times when you do this the same day or are you using something else with the fluid. As far as the engine goes do you think that's the reason for the sluggish driving for the first min. Thanks again for the advice and help.

You also need to start looking at your FICM voltages.

I agree Benny (and it has been WAY more than 30k miles on the tranny). There are three very expensive issues that can generally be avoided with proper maintenance - injectors, transmission replacement, and head studs. The (most likely) engine related issues are why I recommended to get the codes read.

Bismic you said you change it every 30000 miles fill and drain 3 times, are you getting the trans fluid three different times when you do this the same day or are you using something else with the fluid.

It doesn't have to be the same day, but that is what I do. I buy 24 qts of transmission fluid (Mercon SP is what I use). I add nothing else to it.

Your issue is engine related and not the tranny.
