Does any one know if an older Pre S/D Dana 50-60 4X4 front axle will fit in my 2000 S/D? These S/D Ball joints and Berrings are junk I know retro fits are out there but thier abour $2400.00. I think I can get an older complete front end for less than that. Are the S/D axel's any wider than the pre S/D.
I'm not sure about width but the hole pattern is different so you would have to use your hubs and that would mean that you'd have to use your bearings.
the pre s/d dana 50 is an ifs design, therefore it will not be practical. tha pre s/d dana 60 however is a straight axle and will work with some modifications. there is about an inch differance on spring mount pads between them. in all honesty that alone would be a major undertaking to correct. secondly you have to concider the bolt pattern differance. the s/d's have a metric 8 lug pattern compared to the older sae 8 lug pattern. now if you count the cost of yer labor and other parts involved in addition to subtracting some value of yer truck by performing such a mod i dont think it would add up. you would be ahead if you was to just find s/d dana 60 and install it, ill bet that yer truck has the dana 50.
Thank's guys for the info. I think the pre99 S/D 350's dad the Dana 60's in them. Will the steering nuckles change out from a Dana 60? I dont mind changing out the wheels and axle's just want the thing to hold up. Right now I am changing out the balljoints and axle seals for some reason these parts are a problem to get from a non dealer you would think with all the S/D's around they would be easy to get. I talked to another guy he has a 2002 S/D and his ball joints went out at 20'000mi.
