Cool Starter Problems

so the starter finally gave out on my 92 f150 5.0. i bought a need starter and starter relay (because i cracked the relay trying to bypass it, and i installed them and my truck fired right up but it sounded like the starter was still spinning with the truck running and then the starter began smoking. so now that starter is fried. what would cause this? pieces of the old starter? or did i mix a the relay wires up? i need some input, thanks

yes sounds like a good possibility right there. Mixing those wires up would sure cause similar outcome. new starter probably needed now along with relay and possible main cable. While you have starter out it is a good idea to get a look of the flexplate/flywheel teeth around the entire plate. Make sure no chipped teeth or broken metal from the prolonged engagement. If you need more help hooking up wiring, post pics to confirm your thoughts.

the main hot that goes to the starter goes by itself on 1 big post and the smaller wire red/blue push-on or 8mm bolt on goes to the "S" little post... the other big post should go straight to battery, alternator and rest of wire hookups...

If you have the round type relay (external solenoid frequently known as) on the side of fender well, the above info is for you. I a couple image references for better visual:

Did you put an automatic starter in a manual transmission truck with a 164 tooth flywheel??
A flexplate has a thinner ring gear and the automatic starter does not retract enough to get back out of the way of a flywheel.
If you still have the old starter compare the height of the snout.

Hook it up without the little red/blue wire connected to the 'S' terminal.
If it cranks whack the solenoid with a wrench or screwdriver handle.

Did it stop?

If it doesn't start cranking by itself, then connect the red/blue wire.
Does it crank with the key now?

But it keeps cranking?
Will it disengage if you hit the solenoid?

New solenoids fail all the time.
They are crap.
There are dozens of threads on this.

And remove the coil wire at the coil end so it doesn't start until you find the problem.

You have ONLY the starter cable on one large terminal, and all the rest of the wires bunched with the battery cable on the other one?

It continued to crank with the little red/blue wire disconnected?

If yes, listen to ArdWrknTrk....solenoids (even new) can fail at any time.

If no, make sure the power to little red/blue wire is not constant. You should only get 12v to it while cranking and no other time. If there is a constant 12v to it, it's a sign of a failing ignition switch on the steering column.

Actually, you should take pics of what you are working with.... maybe there is a communication barrier or understanding what is explained issue. It really is a very basic resolution and testing should take no more than 20-30mns overall to see what is going on in the entire starting system. Especially if you have a mulitimeter handy even quicker....
