I don't really have the funds or time to be pulling the engine, tranny and cab to actually blast the whole frame. I have the bed off right now as most of you know. I was curious if I could just wire brush and sand the frame, maybe buy a small bead gun and just blast the frame from the cab back and what frame I can get to under the cab and just get some good rattle can paint and paint it instead of the cheap rattle can job and surface rust from the previous owner.. Would that be a bad deal or can I do some rattle can paint and it be okay?
paint without prep is not only pointless, but its worse than leaving it alone. paint over rust will just capture moisture.
the back half of the frame is what rots first, it gets most of the spray (including salt spray) when driving down the road, so there is merit in addressing it only, but obviously it'd be best to do it all and give rust a more difficult place to start. however its all in the prep, sandblasting nooks and hard to reach places is a must, as they are the spots that rot first. rattle can spraypaint is junk though, a high quality paint is the only thing worth using, as it would be stupid to do all the prep work (90% of the job) and not cap it off with something of high quality.
okay I was just curious, the truck will never see salty winter treated roads anymore because it's not my daily driver anymore so i'll keep it stored during the winter. So I guess I shouldn't really worry about it.
But the owner before me had rattle canned the frame and leaf springs. So I was wanting to cover up the cheap rattle can silver and light surface rust.. It also has some spots that has had a wire wheel taken to it so its got spots that are bare metal.
I was wanting to at least cover it with something but I cant afford to pull off everything to just frame and axles to sandblast and have it powdercoated. But I need to do something other than just leave it sit ya know. Not just for looks but to keep it from rotting. Other than surface rust on the frame, leaf springs, and the rear axle the truck is sportless. No body rust whatsoever.
see brad this is good lol I like this reply haha but yah i'm definitely going to get rid of the cheap spray base. I'm going to get it down to a good surface then I have to etching primer then im going to put some good paint on it too.

Etching prime is only good on bare metal. Going over anything else is waste of time
What about Rustoleum rusty metal primer? I've got some cans of that lyin around.. This is temporary a couple years down the road I will have the whole frame powder coated
I painted my frame, gas tank, innner bumpers, and suspension with POR15 the best I could without removing body panels. Takes a few days to do with proper prep, is super messy, and costs a little bit of money but its been on for over a year and still looks brand new. I'd very much recommend that option if you want to save the truck long term

I've used the RMP alot with good results. Here's a couple shots of the resent spray bomb job on my Lightning.
