I just installed the Banks Tsanscommand on my truck and I am a little disappointed in it. I have not towed with it yet but I thought the normal shifts would be a lot better than it is. Anyone have the Transcommand installed on their truck? Also I noticed that some of you guys have the Tricumulator springs, is this for the transmission?
Sorry to hear about your disappointment. I don't have the transcommand so I can't help there. The tricumalator springs are for the transmission. They go in the forward valve body of the transmission and make the shifts quicker. There's also a valve improvement called the sonnex valve that also goes in the forward valve body. The valve is larger than stock and increases line pressure to make the shifts firmer. If you want to learn more, I suggest you do a search under 'sonnex valve' and/or 'tricumalator'. I haven't installed them in my transmission yet as I'm waiting to do it when I change the tranny fluid to Mobil 1 synthetic. But I guarantee they will be the next mod I do to my truck. This will probably happen in the next month or so as I'm approaching 30K miles on the odometer. The reviews are quite mixed on this upgrade as it's subjective in nature as to what you think of the mod and what your expectations are. However, I haven't read one review that said it was a waste of money. Again, do the search and read all the posts and form your own opinion. Good luck.
If you want to find them with a search, you'll have to spell them like this: "Sonnax Valve" and "Tricumulator Springs". I had a hard time figuring out how to spell them correctly when I first started looking.
I installed both today. Now the truck shifts like I would have expected it to shift. Not a throw you back in your seat and burn the tires kind of shift, but a nice firm quick shift. Very nice.
I have the Banks Transcommand in addition to the Stinger Plus performance kit and exhaust brake on my 2001 F250 Powerstroke.
I am pleased with the whole package including the Trans command. I think it firmed the shifts up considerably. This is not to say that there isn't still room for improvement. I am most disapointed with Ford coupling this tranny to the 7.3L Powerstroke. This wonderful engine deserves better.
By the way, I have pulled a 13,000 pound fifth wheel for nearly 13,000 miles now and have almost 45,000 miles on the truck. I have pulled the mountains in the northeast, the rockies and the mountains of the northwest. I am currently on my way to Alaska with the fifth wheel in tow. Truck has performed well. Tranny works OK, but some slow shifting is evident if I let it go 15,000 before changing fluid. I have shortened the interval to 10,000 miles, and the tranny seems happy.
I like the sound ot the tricumulator springs and sonnex valve. My only question is with a constant increase in line pressure, will this shorten the life of the front tranny seal? I have heard that this is a weakness in this transmission.
The Trans Command on my '99 literally had a mind of its own. What I did to straighten it out was this:
Disconnect negative battery cable for about 10 min.
Disconnect Trans Command plug and install jumper plug that is supplied.
Reconnect battery cable and drive the truck at least fifty miles.
Remove the jumper plug from harness and plug unit back in.
I am not sure why it works this way but it made a big difference in shift firmness and the RPM it shifted at WOT.
I have the Transcommand on an Excurion. The shift firmness increase becomes more noticeable as you increase the throttle. Feels almost like stock under light throttle. It definitely shifts quicker under load.
