Zerk in steering column

My steering column has been making some weird noises (creaking) and it has some spots where it seems to jerk, like it has passed a tight spot when I make a turn. Is there a grease fitting on the column somewhere?

It is my 70 F350 with power steering.

thanks!

Nope. Just pre-greased upper and lower bearings. It's probably just the upper bearing that needs to be re-greased or replaced.

What would I need to do to regrease it? About how much if I had to replace?

I believe the proper fix for the upper bearing is to just replace it. They cost around $15 - $20, I think.

On my old column the lower bearing was making grinding noises. When I removed my column I found that it (the lower bearing) had basically disintegrated.

I rebuilt my steering column in my 71 with all new bearings and retainers only takes a couple hours to do hardest part is getting the column out of the truck. Your column should have the same upper and lower bearings if I remember right. Try going to your local ford dealer and they might be able to get or have them for you. I tried getting mine at the dealer but they weren't much help even with the part numbers I gave them. But others on this site had no problems getting what they needed at there dealer.

Same, same. From memory the part number is C3DZ3517A. UPPER and LOWER. Still available from Ford. If you were closer I'd offer to sell them to ya.

Thanks for posting this. I have a 78 Bronco Tilt Steering Column in my 71 F100 Truck. I noticed a little "popping" as I turned, and thought it may be the bearings starting to go.

I wish there were a person on here that did Steering Column rebuilds. I don't have the experience or the time.

78's had different bearings. I've never done one but from selling parts to them all these years I think they are a piece o' cake to take apart.

Great Tip! Thanks! And, this can be done without removing the steering column, I'm guessing. Don't mean to sound dumb, but my truck isn't here right now, or I'd go look (It's at a friend's place getting a Super Bad 390 installed).
