Pulled my steering wheel off, looking for a short that was causing my blinkers and brake lights to malfunction. Found and fixed the problem. Now I can't get the steering wheel back on correctly.
There are 2 square head bolts that connect the flasher switch to the column and also holds the automatic transmission selector down onto the column. I think this is where my problem is. I can't seem to get those square heads to stay in the column. I thought I had it on one try but a) the steering wheel rubbed when turning it and b) the engine wouldn't start. So I guess I'm not lining up the transmission selector correctly.
I will take a stab; check the clamp at the bottom of the steering shaft which basically sets the preload for your column bearings. If it is loose you may have lost a bit of shaft into the column. Even if that is the problem, you will most likely still need to disassemble to get the square heads of those bolts properly seated into the collar (piece the TS switch connects to).
HillBilly- There is no easy trick to getting those two retaining bolts to stay in place while you tighten the nuts. It usually takes me a couple of tries to get them in right. Good luck and be patient.
Do you place the bolts heads in the shaft cut outs and then Slide the shifter switch over them or do you have more luck putting them loosely through the shifter switch first and sliding it over the shaft?
Barely thread the nuts onto the bolts in the collar. Use one hand to pull the nuts toward center, pushing the bolt heads out. Use the other hand to carefully place the collar onto the column. It may need some wiggling, but you'll probably feel it seat. Then tighten the nuts.
Update: I got the steering wheel on (and off about 5 times) I was able to hold the shifter lever in place with the steering wheel off and get the truck to start but each time I got the wheel on, the truck would not start.
That last time I was able to get the truck started by taking it out of Park slightly (but before it goes into Reverse) is rather I didn't have to do this but I'm Ok with it for now. But I seem to have a new problem, the truck has "turned off" twice was stops. Not like a mechanical stall but more like an electric stall, like it just loses power, head lights, cabin lights, etc. just flash off and back on.
