I have been looking into replacing the stock exaust with wither Flowmaster or Dynomax. If anyone knows which is better for performance and fuel milage please let me know. I'm not sure if large exhaust pipes from the muffler back (3 inch) would assist in performance or fuel economy.
most of my friends are running flow master or gibson systems.performance gains are about the same, just ordered my flow master about 2 days ago and can't wait to get it.personally i liked the sound of the flow master better.just my opinion.
i don't see why not.it may not be as deep sounding as a 5.4 or 4.6,but it shoud sound ok.none of the people i know have the 4.2l. so i really can't say forsure.sorry good luck.hey anything you install will be an improvment over stock.
Yes, I've heard a 4.2 with exhaust and it sounded really good. It was quite deep and didn't have any raspyness to it. Its a "small" engine, but a rather large v6.
I used the 40 series on all of mine. I have 7 of them total. 2 on the 77, 2 on the 63, 2 on the 88 5.0LX, and 1 on the 2001 with dual outlets. Sounds good, but not overbearingly loud.

I have a 4.2 v6 with flowmaster 40 si/do . they sound great.. not to loud .. can feel a little more power than stock.. my truck is a 5 speed when I come out of third gear the flows really quiet down.. if you go this way have them install the muffler under the bed .. you wont have so much sound in the cab.. go 2-1/2" in 2-1/4" out ..
When I contacted Flowmaster today they said that I have to go with the 50 series SUV Part # 525562 because of my engine size. Just keeping you posted on my progress.
I have a 430402 on mine. They put a short piece on pipe on to make up for the gas tank sized muffler that came off of it. It was 2 1/2". They expanded the end to 3" to fit the front of my muffler, then put 2 2 1/2" tailpipes on it with stainless tips. The SUV muffler is a 3 chamber I believe and it will be quieter.

Do you think it will be worth it if I at least replace my stock muffler with a flowmaster. But leave the rest of the exhaust pipes the same? Would it make much difference if I only replace the muffler?

I just installed my Force II last night. The toughest part for us was getting the 5 year old original pipe disconnected. The original pipe clamp had created a crease in both pipes at the connection, so we had to use a sawzall to cut slices in the outer pipe and split it enough to slide off. Even with that, I think it took 3 of us about 2 or 2 1/2 hours to do the swap including welding the seams.
Even if there isn't an increase in HP, just finally having my 4.6L sound like a real V-8 was worth the price of the Force II. It has a nice low rumble to it, not too loud but enough of a sound change to immediately know it is not stock.
