Broken NP273F; replacement options?

Broken NP273F; replacement options?
My friend's transfer case is clunking on his '98 F-350 SD V-10 and I'd like to know if there's a better transfer case option (without a bunch of modifying) or if there are any lower gear ratio options or any other upgrades that can/should be done to this one. I did a little searching and didn't find much other than standard rebuilds.
The front output slips & clunks, especially in low, but there's also a little bit of clunky slop in the rear output as well. The truck has 208K miles, he just bought it and it started doing this on our first off-road trip.
