Convert 7.3 Non Computer
When he bought the truck it had starting problems. He took to Ford Dealer where they supposedly brought in Diesel Tech from Corporate b/c no one could figure the problem out. He ended up spending 2000 grand and it wasn't any better than before. He says it is the 6.9 but I think it is a 7.3. I'm going to check it out later this week.
Worse case scenario new engine to be done with it. Question is I really like the idea of non computer controlled 6.9. Thicker cylinder walls also a big plus.
If it is a 7.3 what would it take to remove electronics to make non computer controlled diesel? Also could I have the motor sleeved to revert to 6.9 giving thicker walls due to the sleeves?
You're confusing engines. Any IDI (be it the 6.9 or the 7.3) doesn't have a computer. You may be confusing the 7.3 IDI with the 7.3 Powerstroke (first available in 1994 pick-ups). I don't know the first thing about Powerstrokes, so I'm no help there.
The only thing electronic on an IDI (in terms of getting/keeping the engine running) is the Fuel Shutoff Solenoid (FSS) located on the injection pump, and all it needs is a 12V source.

So if it's a pre-1994 it's already non-computer unless it has the E4OD transmission, then the computer is for the transmission control, not the engine. The 6.9 does have the thicker cylinder walls, but the whole cavitation thing is blown way out of proportion on the 7.3. Just watch your SCAs no matter what you have and you'll be fine.
1987 was the last year for the 6.9 so the only way your friend's truck has it is if it's already had a transplant.
IIRC you can go to pre 1994.5 and still have the IDI, the Power Joke came out in the middle of the year.
