E40D Stopped Working

Hi,
New here, I just bought a 1990 F250 4WD Dually with a 460 in it and 160k on the clock. Bought it with a bad trans. The PO said he was he was driving, it upshifted from 1st into 2nd and then he heard a "snap" and the truck wouldn't wouldn't move in any gear. It's like its stuck in neutral. No grinding or clunking noises. Tans fluid looks good. No burnt smell or anything. Tried in 4wd hi and low with same results. A shade tree mechanic told him there's a band in these trannys that can snap and cause this problem. All the searching I've done I haven't read anything about a band. Any ideas?

Thanks
Bill

The band could be but one thing that would cause this. Many other
things as well. It needs to come out and get torn down. Or replaced.
Have ya crawled under and checked to see if he hit something and
buggered the linkage? Would be nice if it's that simple.
Being a 4X4 it could well be the transfer case. Even the rear end.
But if ya tried it in 4X4 it would move if the front hubs was in.
Really, I have seen the time that the drive-shaft turned back to the rear end.
Yet it was broke and unless ya was in 4X4 with the hubs in it would not move.

If she is a nice truck than hang a clutch and put a 5 speed in her.

I have seen on a C6 when speed shifting to brake the notch out of the
shift rod in the valve body and do just this as well. Ya would have to
drop the pan and valve body and open it up to see this.

Thanks Arctic,
I just got her home over the weekend. SOB sure is big. I thought I had plenty of trailer til I went to load and realized not only was it just barely wide enough for the front end, the outer wheels on the rear axle had to ride on top of the trailers side rails. I was also shocked how heavy the rear of the truck was. I'll post a pic when the option becomes available to me.

You have that option now.

Could we see some pictures? Here is how.

But I got ta say becoming a supporter is the fastest and easiest way to post pics right from
your whatever pad/cell thing or home computer.
Few of us look in the users Gallery or album as you can see by your recent visitors.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

Go to Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket and sign up for a free account. Then create an album for your truck. Upload any pics you want to post on FTE to that album. Have this album open on your computer when you want to post pics on FTE.

While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
The best photos and videos | Photobucket

Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).

When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).

Your pic will be placed in the post.

Hope that helps.

Here's a tutorial Bob put together: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/67...-pictures.html Bob's link is not working. Can someone in the know tell me why?

How to upload pictures to the FTE Forums. - YouTube. Thanks Sam Rusty_Old_F250. Best we can find is that this video was done by Gundown64
