I just got back from a 2k mile trip up to New York last week. While up there I noticed a little squeak from under the truck and it only does it between 2-5mph and only when its cold.
From the sound of the rotations it sounds like drive shaft....I crawled under the truck yesterday just to look. The only thing that really jumped out was the rear trans tail shaft seal is all dry and cracked. The drive shaft had some black rub marks on it from the seal. I think maybe this is the noise.
I am going to drop it off at the dealer and have them replace the seal.....I think it should take care of the noise.
Its not a big deal to me but I don't know why a rubber seal would be dried out and cracked after 2 years and 13,000 miles.
Probably a one off scenario, first I've ever read about this. I guess I should say I haven't seen any complaints of this here on FTE or TDS, doesn't mean they don't exist though.
Any low speed squeaking I hear I directly relate to needle bearings from past experiences. My 2000 did this, it was annoying, not sure if the newer trucks would have the same issue or if they've improved the functionality. I could always tell it was them, went away immediately when thrown into 4WD.
I had the same squeak last year. Sounded like it was coming from the u-joint closest to the diff. My truck was still under warranty so I took it into the dealer. As soon as I pulled into the dealer lot it stopped! Gave it to them anyway to look at and they could not duplicate the noise. Never happened since.
Mine does that when cold too. Maybe for the first 50 yards or so of driving, just a faint squeak-squeak-squeak as I pull away at low speed in the neighborhood.
I took the driveshaft out last weekend to lube the slip yoke (it's f'n heavy BTW) and couldn't feel any binding or rough/notchy action in either u-joint.
