Overdrive off, light flashing

On our 1996 Explorer with a V6 engine, the overdrive off light began flashing and the transmission would not shift unless you let up on the gas pedal. I had the codes checked and it said that the shift solenoid was stuck in the off position. What is and where is the shift solenoid? Thank you.

Look at a thread just below this one that I posted. I hope your problem is not as expensive as my ended up.

At any rate the posted info is Blinking OD light.
