Hey guys kinda been wanting to swap this old 2.9 out for a while my truck is an 89 standard cab 5 speed 4x4 just wondering if my trans and transfer case will bolt up to a 4.0 I know I need a donor explorer from before 94 just seeing some other issues I might face plus im putting the ac into the ranger as well please give me some tips thanks! another question if i get an automatic donor car will the engines computer work?

 

i did the the same thing on my 92 ranger, expect opposite. haha, i had a 4.0 that i swapped a 5 speed into it from an 84 bronco II with a 2.8. they matched up perfectly for that.

 

Why would you go to a 2.8 those have pretty bad track records

Yeah, my 2.8 only lasted 315,000 miles, I think I should have sued Ford.

It should bolt up just fine. You may or may not need a different starter but the rest should work.

Now why would I need the dash from an explorer what's the difference?

 

You don't need the whole dash, just the gauge cluster. It was written up wrong. The gauge cluster is specific to 4.0. Why? Maybe the tach is set different from a 2.9. I swapped my gauge cluster when I put in a 4.0 and on the back it said "For 4.0 use only".

Because you have an 89 you won't need the dash. You would only need the dash if you had an 88 or older. You dodged a bullet there.
