One More Time

Well Friday made the third and fourth time my F250 quit on me. First time was in my yard, started then stopped. An hour or so later it started and ran fine..................for me to take it to the dealer to have it fixed. As it had 7500 miles on it the part and labor was covered. It was a temp sensor in the exhaust somewhere. I explained I was going on a two hour trip that week and would be very upset if it did it a couple hours away. It did causing me and my grandson to sit in a parking lot in the middle of nowhere waiting an hour for it to reset so it would run. The next day it was back at the dealer and I let him know I was not happy. When I picked it up I was told they found a pinched wire harness between the frame and bed. The repair order stated it was "repaired". Well this last Friday, an hour away from home it did the same thing. I waited an hour (missed going to my Drs) until it reset again. It leaves the "check engine" light on each time. I barely got to the edge of my town when it started beeping and message center said "STOP SAFELY NOW". I was on a 4 lane with no breakdown lane and could not stop "NOW". I drove it about a half mile at greatly reduced power to a place where I could pull off where it stopped running. Waiting another hour until it reset again, I drove it the 3 miles to the dealer and just told them I wanted the dam thing fixed. I have had enough of this BS and told them they might as well order a new harness cuz you just don't "repair" a wiring harness on a nearly new vehicle. Next step is going directly to Ford and if they don't want to help me then it's to the DOT. I am a retired ASE Master Mechanic and I know how to get hold of DOT and what happens when you do. Anyone here would give the same dealer a chance after this?
Don't get me wrong, I love this truck when it runs. It handles my camper with great ease and I didn't see why anyone would buy a gas powered Heavy Duty truck but maybe this is the problem.
Is there anyone here had this problem with exhaust temp sensors?

I wonder what the codes are? Doesn't sound like they changed the right sensor the first time.

There have been quite a few of them

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...afely-now.html

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...gt-sensor.html

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...breakdown.html

But ya changing the sensor is not going to get it to go away until the wiring harness is fixed properly or replaced.

Good luck

4th sensor inline. Get a scanner, keep in the truck. Check and clear the pids, and drive it.

Ensure though that you know what is happening before you clear a pid though.

Ok, you guys are scaring me.. there are two part numbers

8C3Z-5J213-D
and
AC3Z-5J213-D

both say Diesel Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor

looks like 8C3Z is 6.4L and AC3Z is 6.7L

I have been told by my dealer that they are the same sensors on both trucks. Only difference between the two trucks is that the 6.4L has 3 of them and the 6.7L has 4.

Here is a pic with one of the part numbers you have. I am told this one will fit my 6.7L. I will check again ASAP though.

Let me see if I understand this. Now that I have a NEW truck, I am supposed to carry around spare parts and a code reader and when it won't start in the middle of the nite in a place that isn't exactly safe, I am supposed to crawl underneath the truck and exact a repair or replace a part myself. Does this sound reasonable to anyone here?

No sir , It does not . However , that is the nature of the beast . The EPA mandated this crap . See how well it works ! Now a few other things are failing that are mandates . But big brother knows best !

Don't blame Ford, blame the EPA! With all the stupid mandates that Ford is being forced to follow, we have to deal with useless parts that are more prone to give out!

Yes but the quality of these sensors and programming are selected by Ford.
We need the sensors and the truck does need to shut down in a real EGT emergency.

The computer should be able to figure out what is a true issue and what is a sensor failure.
Being stranded because the last sensor is confused while the first three (closer to the engine) are reporting correctly is silly.
Limit the truck to 55 MPH. I would rather do that than shutdown on a two lane road with no shoulder, where I spend a lot of time.
If EGT's are an issue and the truck needs to shut down, the first EGT sensor would report it and the second sensor would be closely behind.
That way, to keep cost down, Ford can use these sensors.

No, it doesn't sound reasonable at all. However, in the event you do find yourself stuck in an undesirable place having a code reader to clear the codes should get you out. You can get a bluetooth ODB2 reader off Amazon for under $20 and pair it to your smartphone using Torque.

Also, while the EPA may be responsible for the exhaust system I would think Ford could find the engineering talent to make sure the exhaust gas temp sensors work. I'd be pi$$ed too...Its not like its a flux capacitor.

Give this man a cigar ! That is how I feel about this issue . They try to protect the emission (warranty ) parts but do not put in a redundant system to check the # . I have customers that have gone to other makes and gassers because of this issue ! I do not blame them though . I have " rescued " several trucks from remote areas because of EGT sensor forced shut down !

Hi thumbuster,

Reach out to me via PM so I can look into this. In your message, be sure to include your name, phone number, mileage, VIN, and dealership info. I'll get to work.
