1973-1975 ford 4x4

i have a chance to revisit what remains with possibly salavaging what i can from an old ford truck that my uncle owned. the truck crashed nearly 30 years ago and from what i understand it is mostly just stripped now. i want to say that it is a 73 f-100, but my memory of it is a bit foggy in a way. so my question, is there any way to identify what year the truck is, just in case the vin number is missing

Is really knowing of high importance? 73-75s are very much the same.

First stop is the frame VIN. Other than that, casting/engineering codes can shed some light but only by process of elimination - A D5xx would not be on a 73 or 74 and a D4xx would not be on a 73. Then there is the issue of replacement parts which can date code back to C8xx.

1966 F100 4WD first year to have coil spring front suspension, 1976 was the last year F100's available with 4WD.

What year is it? Last 6 digits of the VIN is the serial number, decodes to the year.

Vin is (so I read) is in 2 places on the frame. Sort of inline with the alternator on the passenger side frame rail and on top of the frame rail, under the cab about where the front seat bolts down, passenger side. Degreaser, wire brush, flashlight, insp mirror.

If the dvrs door and that (warranty tag?) are gone, look for the vin and manufacture date on the decal (?) below the dvrs door striker.

i sort of thought that there was differences between those model years. i missed out on getting this ford tabout 6 months before the accident happened. in which it would had been my very first car. i've been wanting to build a clone of this ford. i sort of thought about just going by what i remember. but last week, i learned that what remains is still around. i thought it was cool that i actually get the chance to photograph it as much as possible to get the details right. what i am mostly unsure is where the gas tank was, and did the taillights have just two or four screws. thank you for your help

73 probably a in the cab, behind the seat fuel tank, and 2 screws for the tail light covers. There are (?) separate from the metal insert, with one screw on the top and one on the bottom.

Not to sure what year they went to one piece all plastic tail light assembly where the bulb locked into the housing?

ND will tell us or correct anything I have said that is wrong.

Depends if you're talking the 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton 4x4 trucks...

The 73-75 3/4 tons will have drum brakes, closed knuckle axles, king pins, and 16 spline rears.

The 76-79 3/4 tons will have disc brakes, open knuckle axles, ball joints, and 30 spline rears.

Whats sorta ironic is if it crashed 30 years ago, it may still be more original than most of mine have been! with most of mine, all the VIN did was serve to tell me how much had been changed/modified/upgraded since the build date. Wont some of the data be on a plate on the firewall?

This is called a "buck tag", I do believe that is what ND called it. I found 2 of them on 7 cabs checked and no other tag or data plate on the firewall, other than that tag.

Maroon one is behind the power brake booster and a 79 truck and silver is a 77.5.

Remember these 2 other places to locate a vin.

I only see those "buck tags" on probably 2 out of every 10 trucks.....they always seem to be missing.

I think the '75's had 30 spline rears.

I was just rounding up

But you're correct, the late 75's had 30 spline rears (after serial #W80,001)
