I got a new one at NAPA for around $150, and comes with a lifetime warranty. Can't beat that. Don't forget to negotiate with them...they can usually come down 20-35% as they inflate their prices on the retail sales versus their contract shops. But a part is a part...if you can sell it cheaper to one guy, you can sell it for the same price to another. Just be polite and courteous, and don't be afraid to ask them if they have a "cash price." Of course, you need to have cash in that case.
There are those that like to upgrade the alternator, but as with anything else - you have to upgrade other items on the battery system to accommodate more juice from the alternator.
It will work for a while. My experience with rebuilt alternators has been less than stellar when dealing with the local or online parts stores though.
I agree 100% Chris about the rebuilt alternators.
I myself went with a NEW 6.0 alternator from Advance Auto #92570 and bought it online and picker it up at the store and I used promo code ES123. There are some treads out there about doing the 6.0 alternator and here is a photo of a 7.3 and a 6.0. I used the 7.3 pulley which is the smaller one, grind alittle bit on mounting bracket since the housing is larger than the 7.3 110amp one and you have to reclock the housing. Stock wiring and same plug.
When my time comes, i am going to look for a Made in USA 6.0 alt. The plan is to add washers between the alt and support rather than grind the support. My .02

So little is taken off when grinding I don't think it matters, but I understand where you're coming from. I thought about the washers myself, but decided against them since it would put a tad bit more strain on the belt tensioner.
Previous owner installed a DB Electrical#7796 135A alternator. Looks like stock wiring still and a bolt on "upgrade", though I don't really have extra draw unless the camper is on. I've heard mixed reviews on the DB, but so far so good (5 years).
When I had my F250 I had the alt rebuilt twice by a local builder. It failed for the third time in FL. I went to the local Autozone and bit the bullet and bought a NEW alt for I believe just over $200. A little more but the alt was still going strong when I sold her and I believe it had lifetime warr also!
You know my plan, but another thought. Now that you have already done a 6.0 , can we grind the alt without damage?
Probably. I didn't consider that since even though I bought new instead of rebuilt, there's still a chance I'll need to use the "lifetime" warranty and don't want to have to argue with some kid about any grinding marks on the case if, on the odd chance, he looks up from his I phone.
