Hey guys. Like the forum and look forward to participating in the future as a new owner. Just bought a 2003 rwd V10. I do have a few questions. I've heard ball joints are an issue at some point on the Excursion. Mine has 99K miles, is that the range where this issue might arise? Second, and I have beat around the internet for half a day to find this answer- Does the 2003 Excursion have a cabin air filter? Mine has a musty smell when the a/c kicks in and I'd like to address that issue with a new filter if possible and some de-funkifier. I'm looking forward to hearing from other owners. Funny how many Excursions I see on the road now that I own one.
Welcome to our forum.
Excursions have no cabin filter.
You have two choices if your AirCon system smells like a wet dog.
First: You go to a dealer and they spray a stuff in those airchannels to
disinfect them
The more cheaper way is to blow your aircon dry (using just your vent without AC) after you used it before you
shut down your engine. A dried air channel cant build up those little green men
causing the smell.
Try this first and maybe your smell dissapear automatically after a couple of
blowoutroutines.
Wet dog, you called it. A friend got in it and that's exactly what he said. Thanks for the advice. I had a 2003 Mountaineer that had the same issue and after 3 trips to the dealer they told me never to use the max a/c to avoid the smell.
I had good luck spraying Lysol disinfectant spray through the fresh air draw by the windshield wipers. I did the same as others, ran the heat on high, closed everything up in the truck, and let it rip. I also turned on the recirculate function and left the truck sealed up. I do this as regular maintenance to prevent this sort of thing, but my wife's very sensitive to smells, and she has no complaints.
To answer your question on the cabin air filter directly, no the Ex does not have one.
As for ball joints, 99k is no too early for you to see issues, but IMO wouldn't be likely. They are a wear item that has a lot to do with how you use your truck and any suspension mods you have, or your wheel and tire package. If you're hearing a clunking noise going over bumps, give them a look. Easiest way to see if they are on their way out is to put the truck up on a jackstand and rock the tire back and forth at the top and bottom. If you feel play you're likely to have either a ball joint or wheel bearing that's on it's way out.
