OT-SNOW CAP
i found a product called " SNOW CAP" that removes rust stains from
masonry-metal-brick-glass-stucco-driveways-sidewalks-wood-pool decks-vinyl
i have used this on some rust stains in my driveway & it works-i have not tried it on anything else yet-it is a powder that comes in a one pound container
i bought this at a paint store here in florida called " SCOTTS PAINT" i forgot what i paid for it but it was cheap-it says 4spoons make 1 gal i only needed a little so i used 1/2 of a spoon & made 1 pint
You had to make me learn something, didn't you AX? I always thought Caustic (soda) was alkaline, not acid. When I worked in a milk processing plant we washed down with Caustic soda in hot water, and rinsed with acid (citric acid to be specific)
Now I know something more. Thanks Buddy.
Aloha,
Oldebrush,
Caustic soda is a very different chemical: NaOH, than sodium acid sulfate NaHSO4!
Caustic soda is often called Lye or drain cleaner (Draino) and is a VERY caustic (basic) compound in solution, can easily burn the skin. It however does not attack metals except aluminum which makes it safe to use in drains. It works to clean drains by reacting with animal fats to form soap (the way soap was made for centuries) and dissolving organics like hair.
Sodium acid sulfate solution is only mildly acidic (chemically opposite a basic compound) and is very mildly corrosive to metals. Food grade sodium acid sulfate is sometimes used in food as a preservative and as I noted, in swimming pools to adjust the water chemistry. It would work as a driveway cleaner by dissolving iron oxide (rust).
