Hello, need help with the 96 f150. Replaced the alternator three times, still overcharging, 16.2 @ idle unloaded. The battery has 13.8 volts after sitting disconnected for 24 hrs. I'm the original owner everything is bone stock.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

With the engine off, make sure you have 12v on the yellow/white wire going to the alternator. Unplug the plug and probe it to make sure. This is the wire that the internal regulator uses to monitor the voltage level in the truck's wiring. If it's bad and think's the voltage is low, it's going to tell the regulator that and the regulator is going to tell the alternator to charge too much.

Thanks Dave for the fast reply. Actually, just went out and checked the voltage on the battery after disconnecting it, 15.2 volts, I'll have it checked. If the battery is bad I'll check the wire with the new battery connected.
Thanks again,
I'll let 'ya know what I find.
Jeff

Dave had the battery checked, 12.44 volts 592 c/a out of 650? Anyway brought it home, cked the yellow wire 12 volts, went by work grabbed another multimeter, re-cleaned the terminals etc. Started it up cked with the G@@D meter, 14.4 volts, loaded it up at idle 14.3. Now my silly gauge is still above the center mark, guess its bad along with my Craftsman multimeter.
Appreciate the info on the wire ck.
Thanks again,
Jeff
