freind of mine has a 85 -f250 4x4 460 automatic, keeps running the battery dead battery is new , cables are good and tight .what should my voltage be at the allternater and at the voltage regulater ??????
You can take the alt to autozone and they have a machine that will test it. I don't know what type of alt you have, but if you have the older kind where you can get to the "F" terminal on the alt, you can take the "F" wire off(tape it up so it doesn't short out) and get a scrap piece of wire and hook it to the "F" terminal. Start the truck, and while holding the meter on the battery, touch the "F" wire to the bat +. This will throw the alternator wide open, and you should see the voltage jump up if the alt is working.
If the voltage didn't jump up, the make sure you have 12 volts on the "bat" terminal of the alt with the truck off. If you don't then there is a fusible link in that wire that is probably burnt out. If you have 12 volts on the "bat" terminal, and the voltage didn't jump with the "F" wire test, then you can assume the alt is bad.
My new battery wouldn't hold a charge either. Had new battery cables and the alternator tested out fine. Turns out the glove box light was always on, running the battery down.
