inside door handle orientation?

I've had this operator apart and back together in a '48 F3 and the inside door handle sits about 4 o'clock and the operation is sloppy in that there isn't any spring tension until you pull the latch. There isn't any 'detent' to it at all. I've had it back out and can't see anything worn or broken, springs or otherwise.
What am i missing?

4 o'clock position is unlocked position. To open the door, the handle needs to be pushed down from the 4 o'clock position down towards the 6 o'clock position. The door is locked from the inside by pulling the handle up from the 4 o-clock position to the 3 o'clock position.

So, 4 o'clock is right? Cool. I've had it apart 3 times now trying to 'fix' it!

I have been corrected on this in the past. The correct position for the driver's door is 8:00 (4:00 for the passenger), down from there to open, up to lock.

Excellent write up with pictures by 51Panelman:

Seems this should depend on which door you are working with. 8:00 on the drivers door would be 4:00 on the passenger door, right?

Position of inside door handle:

I don't know much about 48-52 trucks but I would assume that the position of the inside door handle would be the same .

According to the instructions in the 1953 Ford Truck Body, Trim and Sealant Assembly Manual, on page 18 of the 1953 book and on page 19 of the 1954 book, it says:

"With window in closed position, install door and window regulator handles on serrated shafts to point in a forward direction. Their centerline should be approx. 45 degrees above a horizontal line of cab, (plus or minus 11 degrees). Secure each door or window regulator handle in position with one retainer spring, item 4."

In other words they should be pointing forward at about between 10 and 11 o'clock. This way your hand will not hit the door handle when you roll your window up or down and it is easier to lock the door and to open the door.

Perhaps later I can scan the page and place it on here for all to see the diagram. I would recommend anyone to get this booklet.
