I got a 89 f250 460 auto 4spd. It shifts fine 1st to 3rd, but wont go into 4th(overdrive). Fluid is in range on stick and not burnt. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Assuming you have an E4OD transmission in your truck, it is 100% electronic controlled. The best advice is to check for codes by running the Key On Engine Off (KOEO) and Continuous Memory (CM) display. This can be done using a paper clip or a code reader.
Ok I ran the KOEO test and got 1 1 1 1, 3 3 3 3. No OD buttons. I did notice it has trans fluid in the vac hose on the module on the back of trans. Im sure that's bad, but it wouldn't affect the shifting would it? I ran the vin and it said 4spd trans. Thanks.

system pass KOEO = 11, then a continuous memory code 33 = egr not closing properly. (make it idle/run like crap, varying by how far its stuck open)
Far as trans, no OD button + vac modulator = C6
Are you sure its 4 speed, that doesn't jive with what you're describing.
Oh and yes it sucking trans fluid up the modulator vac line, not a good thing replace the modulator its shot. Does the motor smoke, might notice it when sucking up enough of the trans fluid.
The PO said it said it sat for a while. It smoked at first few start ups, now it don't smoke. Changing module tomorrow. Like I said by the vin description should be 4spd. What are the difference (shapes, markings) to tell a C6 from A4OD? It does have a wire harness from the shift position sensor. Its been a while for me on the computer controlled stuff. Help is always welcome. Thanks..
Ok C6 it is, 17 bolts. Changed module NAPA #1-4657.
So is there any not expensive options for OD, or do I have to deal with running 2800rpm at 60mph..
Thanks for the help.
Your only options are basically a 5 speed swap, or an external overdrive unit. An E4OD swap is doable, but you'd need the driveshafts, computer and complete electrical harness of an '89-'92 truck.
