Also presently running 31" tires, not sure if that's gonna make a huge difference?
Hey Mike, my 66 shortbed has a 5.0/AOD with a Dana 44LS, 3.54 gears. I'm also running 31" rear tires. At 75/80mph I'm still barely at 2000rpms.
According to this calculator, yours with the 4.10 gears should only be running 2177rpms at 70mph. Calculators
As long as you have those big tires on the rear, I don't know if lesser gears are really necessary but that's up to you. You can plug in different numbers to that calculator to see what other tire/gear options would net for your application.

That's what I was hoping. I was experiencing a huge RPM difference between 2-3 shift. Once into 3rd she quiets down, OD even more so. I'm going to pull the trans and take a look anyway. PO put an earlier version AOD in, so I'm switching to later 89-92 version. I think I asked you before but where did you get your gear selector indicator from? I still need to switch mine.
Thanks John. What donor could I find that set in? Would like to find a direct replacement spline type so I'm not running into all kinds of problems. I read on another thread about conversion u joints and all that, trying to avoid that headache if at all possible.
Crossover u-joints aren't any hassle at all but finding matching yokes might be. Just measure the width of the u-joint and outside diameter of the of the bearing cap for both the pinion yoke and the driveline yoke and any driveline guy can tell you what you need. Changing them out is the same as any u-joint replacement.
Mike, all the half-ton D60's I have seen have had 3.54 gears, so you might want to look for one of those. They are not as common as you would like them to be.

My engine & AOD are from a '92 Mustang GT. I'm still using my original column shift with the cruiseomatic selector indicator. The 92 Mustang shifter only showed 3 forward gears OD, D, L. My cruiseomatic selector also shows 3 forward gears - white dot, green dot, L. For overdrive I use the "white dot" on my selector. It works well. Feel free to ask any questions about it if you need more info.

No such thing as a half-ton Dana 60. Dana 60 only installed in F250's.
Dana 60.2: 1963/66 F100 & Dana 60.3: 1966/69 F100. OP's truck has a Dana 60.3, but it's 4.10-1.

Bill, any idea or best guess why original owner would have special ordered this? When I bought the truck it didn't have scratches and dents from 40 plus years of being a work truck. It did have a series of small holes running along the bed floor at tailgate. Also same hole size in front corners of bed floor. My first thought was lumber rack, but truck just doesn't seem to been used that way. Not ever having any experience with campers, would they have been bolted in that way? Just curious.
Thanks

My guess is they might be drain holes. I remember some people built plywood boxes inside the bed to protect it much like those plastic bed liners that rotted out the floors.
410s are a good towing gear. Maybe he bought it to tow a large camp trailer.

Good call Rogue. Hadn't thought about drainage. If so wish he would have put some in front center of bed, that was my only rust issue. Pulling a trailer another possibility, thought that too considering the giant utility bumper with bolt on hitch plate but never found any trailer wiring. Sadly I'll never know.
