I've been reading as many threads as I have time for.I've had a 79F250 4x4 for 17 years.Finally decided to scrap the 351 and drop in a 460. Thanks for all the posts on that.No questions about the swap got it handled.But everyone I've talked to says Ford didn't build any hiboys after 77.Well mine has a factory hi pinion Dana 60 front, massive leafs and sits higher than any stock 79 I've ever seen.
Anyone one else have one?
C6, np205,dual piston discs,power brakes and steering, cruise.
curious about the hiboy. I just got a 79 F250 4x4 custom/Explorer and was curious as to what height of lift I would have to do to get the truck to the same height as a hiboy ?

The Highboys also had a divorced T-Case and a cross member under the front bumper connecting the frame rails (which are wider in the rear than the highboys, I think 38"? IIRC). I am in agreement with Montana as with the D60 high pinion in front its prob has the Snow Fighter package on it.
Any one else care to chime in if they had a heavier spring setup that might have jacked them up a bit? ...Being on the west coast all we see is the front ends people have snaked for their highboys
Okay, so you have had the truck since about 1995 or 1996, and its a 1979? how can you be sure what is or isnt stock, original or factory? in the trucks first 16 or 17 years, how many owned it, and what changes were made if any? not trying to burst bubbles, but late 60's-late 70's 4 wheel drive Fords were often modified by owners who wanted beefier components. Regardless, it sounds like a great truck!
I agree, If it's a factory HP Dana 60 than it must have had the Snow Fighter package. You were correct no "Highboys" were built after mid year 1977. As previously stated, highboys all had Divorced transfer cases, in cab fuel tanks, narrower frames (I think 4" narrower than standard trucks) the low hanging front crossmember, 2.5" rear leafs, and IIRC they had a 6 or 7 spring pack in the front. Regardless, a Snow Fighter F-250 is a nice score. Highboy or not. Post some pictures if you can, we love truck **** and they will greatly help the experts on here help you figure out what you've got. Posting the vin would help too. Decoding the warranty plate on the door tells you a lot (but are sometimes changed out) there is also a vin on the frame up on the front passenger side of the frame. Hope this helps
I just went outside and compared my two, the white 76 pictured, and the one i got last week, a 77. Both are Highboys, with Divorced Transfer cases.on the 77 a previous owner installed a 79 front grille assembly, removed the incab tank, welded in a patch and did the bodywork so it looked like no incab tank was ever present, changed both the steering box and P/S pump, dropped in a 460, and it has a 3 leaf front spring pack, as opposed to the 6 springs in my 76. Since the 77 has two fuel tanks under the bed, both with fuel filler doors, im guessing that maybe all the body parts may be from 78-79?
Thanks Numberdummy, and it just illustrates how much stuff gets changed frequently on trucks that are close to 40 years old.......both of mine have the 77/79 fuel filler doors, one has a single rear mounted one, while the other has front and rear ones.....and the door tag VIN on the 77 lists VIN as 224xx, and it shows same on Oregon title docs, so that would suggest doors were off a late 77, not a highboy. its got a branded title "reconstructed" so that could explain a lot.........The 76 doesnt even have the factory VIN tag on the door, and Oregon assigned it a VIN, F26YRB57xxx while the metal tag in the eng compartment has F25YPA05xxx, so its also been changed a bunch too
Frankentrucks. I think finding a stock truck with original sheet metal is more rare than finding one that's been through many body panel changes.
That's why I like Alice so much. Every panel is original to the truck including the tail gate. How do I know? When I painted it, I stripped the paint by D/Aing it down with 80 grit. Every panel had the identical paint history. (which is why I sand off all the old paint layer by layer, to see what happened to the truck in it's life time.)
Ok thanks.I didn't think they made them in 79 but the front diff had me wondering. Doesn't have divorced transfer case, or any of the other differences described. Bought it from original owner with his original bill of sale from Downtown Ford in Sacramento. Got it for $1500 back then so ya it was a steal.I'll take some pics this weekend and post.Had it non op-ed since 98 and finally got around to it a few months ago....VIN is
F26HRFA1192...351m still ran but I put bearings in it in 97,quick fix for the knocking, and when I started running it again it started rattling away.Friend gave me a wrecked 83 F350 with a 460.No brainer there.

VIN: F26HRFA1192
F26 = F250 4WD Pickup / H = 351M / R = San Jose CA Assembly Plant / FA1192 = 1979.
