Glow plug relay LED indicator light

After a lot of searching the forums for advice I decided to install a LED light hooked up to the Glow plug relay. I installed it right next to the wait to start light and chose amber because it was a similar color as the WTS. I bought it from radio shack and including the inline fuse I probably spent less then $10. I bought
a stancor relay but haven't installed it yet.

A light is nice, but I want to see what the voltage is and what it is doing. This way I am checking that Batts, glow plug relay and Alt all at the same time.

I have a plug in volt meter that goes in the power port.

1) Voltage should start out at 12.5v.

2) Turn key on the the voltage will drop 1v to 11.5 while the glow plugs are on.

3) Hit the starter (after cylinders are warm) and the voltage will drop a little more (11v) while the glow plugs are on. If it drops below 10.5 volts, then the truck will not start as it needs 10.5 for the systems.

4) When truck is started the voltage will go to 12.5v until the glow plugs go off and then the voltage should slowly climb to 14.5v. This is the output of the Alt.

5) A deviation of these numbers will point you in the direction of where you may have a system problem.

Thanks. Looks like you might have used the next size down LED. I was standing in radio shack debating which one to get.

That Innova is a good unit. I had one and used it on the boat quite a bit as well as the vehicles. My SGIIs display voltage so I gave the Innova to a friend with a 6.0L, he needed it more than me!

I've been wondering where to put mine, that looks like a good spot.

Does anyone know if they sell the led light in 110v, been thinking about putting one in that lights up when my truck is plugged in.

Yes, they are around.
If you cannot find one, you can put a resistor of the proper resistance inline to the hot side of the light to get the correct voltage to the LED. I believe you should be in the 40K ohms range. (I think)

Does this mean you might have forgotten to unplug the truck once and tried to leave? Haha

Could mean he likes to know that there is power to the engine heater..... just like knowing when the GP ACTUALLY turns off.

That's the main reason. Haven't drove off with it yet. But I'm putting a plug in my bumper like is on my semi so it'll be harder to see when I run out the door late for work.....

This is where I mounted mine on my previous 7.3

Probably will go with the same spot once I get another gauge pod.

Yea I did the same spot. The way I looked at it, if I messed up somehow, which piece is cheaper to replace. But I like mine.
