Roof Rack Built

Hey Everybody,

Not one to spend money when I have the skills to do something myself, I made a roof rack this last week. I used 16 gauge, 1" square tubing. I made the cross bars and mounts just like I made ones for my old Tahoe, so it was pretty easy... just time consuming. Whole thing cost $170 in materials and welding consumables (and flap disks).

Here are some pics:

Hope it looks okay. I like it. Now to make the AR-15 Rack for the area that the spare used to be in!

Gteat job, looks better than the stuff they build on Trucks or Xtreme4x4 . Very cool to have the skill and equipment to do this kind of job.

It's not even the money saved that's the best part, making something exactly how you want it and knowing the quality you built it with is rewarding!
That's a great looking roof rack

Thanks guys!

kornfanjoe: you are right. It is not about the money really. I have made exactly what I want and it is very stout. The spare tire mount is positioned so that I can mount up to a 35" tire if/when I ever lift the Ex. Satisfaction from creating your own stuff is what it is about.

Thanks Crunk! When you decide to build, if you have any questions about what I did just let me know. This place is about sharing.

Thank you! I'm not sure how the reps thing works, but it is sure nice to get them! I just went to my User Control Page and found that others have given me reps in the past and I didn't even know it happened.... I guess I should look at that page more often so I can make sure I thank people in the future.

I just used my small Lincoln Flux-Core welder for this project. I have what I call "the Bad Boy" that I used to use when I was making heavy duty winch bumpers and swing out tire carriers and such for vehicles as a kind of side-job. It is an old but trusty MillerMatic. It is in storage at the moment and I didn't feel I needed to drag it out for this.

When we moved from Missouri down here to Florida, I had to sell a bunch of my fabrication tools... NOT happy about it, but such is life. I have enough toys left around to make little things like this rack.
