Anyone ever replaced the lower alternator on these trucks? I bought a 2000 and the people who owned it before me put a shorter belt on to bypass the lower alternator, I want to take it out and replace it so Im back to 2 alts.
Hey stewart, thanks for the reply, I Wanted to go back to the 2 Alt. setup because I use a dump trailer with my truck among other trailers like my camper, etc... I finally got the alt. out of the truck(what a pain) and it is seized up solid, which is why they bypassed it im guess since an autoparts replacement is $200 0_o. my battery light is on as well which is a bother to my brain everyday. any suggestions on what brand Alternator to replace it with or rebuild the one I have?
If you have a trusted shop in your area that does quality rebuilds, I'd go that route.
If you buy one of the lifetime alternators from O'Reilly's, Napa, Autozone, etc, it's a crap shoot.
The one in my sons truck has been going strong for a year, but the one in my daughters truck didn't last 5 months. Luckily the alt on top is extremely easy to replace.
I too run a dump trailer and a travel trailer, but I don't see how having a second alternator helps there, since the trailers have their own battery set ups and there is no taxing draw. Or is your setup different?

Man this dump trailer battery will not stay charged, I did put a solar charger on it but still if I run it alot it draws the battery down big time and frankly with it loaded with firewood 10 trips a day it kills it quick. I ran 2 conductor-2AWG back to the rear bumper and put an anderson 175 amp quick disconnect and same setup on the trailer, so im running off my 2 batteries and alternator.
