I have a question about my 1996 460 in a an RV. I replaced the alternator with a lifetime warranty high output model. Now the belt shreds itself on the alternator pulley and fills the alternator with black powder. I have replaced the alternator 3 times and the tensioner. I think maybe the high output model is too hard for the belt to properly turn. The only power accessories I have are power windows and power drivers seat. Should I try a normal output alternator? And would it be enough to charge the storage batteries for the RV? Thanks, Chinook311
I wouldn't think it is a matter of the engine not being able to turn the alternator. Does everything line up when the new alt is installed? The alt pulley grooves match up with the belt grooves? Do the pulleys match up between the old and new alt? I'm sure someone else will have some other ideas.
The alternator and air pump does not use a Automatic Tensioner, you have to loosen the bolt on top and pry the alternator to Tension the belt and while holding the alternator tighten the bolt.
You may also have to loosen the pivot bolt also. All the points are pointed out in the image below.
The Automatic Tensioner is for the A/C and power steering pump.
Both belts drive off the crank and water pump.
This is the way my RV is and the 1996 shop manual says the same.
Ok. I replaced the tensioner trying to eliminate the squeal of the belt. I had work done on my RV at a tow yard and I think the mechanics skills were questionable. I dont know what the original alternator was. Everything looks like it lines up but it still eats belts. Cant really afford to take it in for service so I am looking for suggestions. Cant believe the high output alternator would make any difference to the belt.
