Hey guys, I'm doing a 3G alternator upgrade on my 82 4.9. I've been searching threads, posts, and numerous hardware stores for a part number for a washer/shim. Garys bible site has a photograph of one but I cant make out the part number. I know the dimensions 1" x .05" thick with 17mm hole. I've tried autozone, lowes, menards, advance auto and runnings and a bunch of other places. Anyone know where I can order one?
Remove the serpentine pulley and when you assemble the alternator with the V belt pulley put the OE washer between the V belt pulley and alternator. That's what I did when I upgraded to the 3G alternator.
From everything I've read I need a spacer on the alternator pulley. My truck has a double v belt and the new alternator pulley is serpentine belt.
Thought all you did was swap pulleys?
Take a 17 mm wrench to the hardware and find a SAE washer with a hole as big as the wrench.
Or better yet when at the store find a 17 mm blot and then find a washer the bolt will fit thru.

Nope what you have to do is install a shim washer between the pulley and the 3G alternator as the V belt pulley will rub if you don't.
I used to have one saved on ebay it was the proper size and thickness but the listing is gone now. You can buy a alternator pulley shim that will work and maintain the washer on the front of the pulley. Its what I had planned on doing when I do my 3G alternator conversion if I ever do it.
I haven't done the upgrade myself yet so I don't want to chime in on the wire but in preparation for it and the voltmeter change I pulled a length of the harness that matched mine from a parts truck. I am going to cut that harness in half where needed and then flip it around and splice the wires that need to remain intact. This will create a jumper harness that I will put between the plugs of the factory harness allowing changes to be made to the jumper but not cutting anything on the factory one. Make sense? Just an option if you don't want to cut yours.

Thats a great idea. i've already got mine almost done, just have to put the smog pump back in and should get some new vbelts in the mail today. I was 99% sure that was the correct place to put in the wire from the alternator, was just looking for confirmation.

Be interested in seeing that. that's one thing I hate is the thought of cutting the oem harness. I know I probably never will go back to the 1G alternator but I am in the habit of keeping all my vehicles where they can always be reverted back if need be.
Just wanted to thank you all for the help. Got it all finished up yesterday at a friends (who happened to have impact wrench lol) and drove it 80 miles home without any issue. I did end up using the washer off the new alternator pulley between the alternator and the original dual vbelt pulley. Just an FYI, I did pull the original white/bk choke wire from the original harness and used a quick splice connector on the new pigtail. Green/red wire went to the location shown in the previous photo (which was right below where the old regulator was located). I also ended up using a bussmann 150 amp circuit breaker and mounted it using one of the same holes as the old regulator. Again, thanks everyone. I wouldnt have even attempted to do it myself without such great support from here!
