TRANSMISSION PROBLEM
"Son has a '04 F-150 (and is 3 hrs away @ college). Early in the week, he said that it would suddenly act like it came out of drive. He would shift into neutral and then back in to drive. Now, it won't go forward at all but it will go in reverse. He checked the fluid level (warm engine) and said it was fine. Going to check it out and bring it home if necessary. Any ideas why it will go in reverse but not go forward?"
Theres just a Ton of mechanicaly inclined Folks here for Shure Best Forum around Hands down IMO!!!!
Now Im not 100% shure but most tranny fluid should be checked with trans warmed up Running in Park when the fluid should be checked so ids this how he did it???
Any way to see the trans Range sensor??
Maybe a Shift Silinoid??
Probably take a Ford enhanced scanner to see any Trans DTC I would think
MARK K. has been on here tonight maybe he will see it and have some Ideas
I'm not an expert on that trans, but if it doesn't move at all then I think something mechanical has broke inside the trans.
Understand that I am no transmission expert. I am just another idiot Ford dealer technician, but I hope it helps either way.

To clarify, it won't go forward at all...in none of the forward gears, but it will go in reverse. When I put it in forward and pressed the gas pedal, it just revved up like it was in neutral. I shifted it into 2nd and then 1st with no change. Tried rocking the truck back and forth and again no luck. Got a message on the dash saying "Transmission Failure" and "Engine in Failsafe Mode". Engine is running good...checked the transmission fluid level and it is between the min/max marks. So I backed her up on the trailer and strapped her down and headed south. More to come when I find out...hopefully tomorrow.

for the transmission, how about the shift plates/ linkage could be missed up in order.. clutch flywheel etc... thats a pretty good place to start. i have had that issue with a stick.... never auto so im not 100% sure. let us know!
I also stand by my statement that repair will require transmission removal and either disassembly, or replacement.
And, having the front of the truck on the back of the trailer made for a nerve-racking drive home. I would've much rather had the front-end weight of the truck forward of the axles...it wouldn't have been such a 'bouncey' ride home. But I didn't have a winch or the muscle to get it on there facing forward, so I had to back it on. Looking at the bright side...on the trip home I stayed wide awake and didn't get sleepy at all

i hauled a d 70 one time about 2 miles for my job, and had to do something similar
had my rear end going up and down down the gravel road.

is this something you plan on taking on yourself?
