changing lifters

Howdi,
Ok, so Im reading my Steve Christ Big Block ford book here, and it says, under Valve-Train Noise quote,,"If the engine has hydraulic lifters and a noisy valve train, a lifter is the probably culprit", both of which i have.
Goes on to say lifters can be changed wihtout removing intake mani,. So I can chnage them withOUT pulling engine ??? I guess so eh?,, it says to remove rocker arm shaft...blah blah
Also says to check rods to see if they are bent or not. I did check 2 and they were fine. I should check rest though.
All the rods were rotating as well.

Also how much for a set of lifters??
Thanks for the help.

Sorry if it doesnt make any sense, im tired and sick and i took some gravol.....G'nite.

Pulling the intake manifold and pulling the engine are not the same thing.

I've never tried to replace the lifters with the manifold in place, but it looks like it would be a bit tricky. Access through the manifold and the valley oil pan would be very restricted.

It's not all that big a job to pull the inlet manifold, though it would be much easier with an engine hoist to lift it, as it's very heavy. I pulled my inlet with the engine out, so I had been able to pretty throughly drain the coolant. With the engine in place I'd be a little worried about spilling whatever coolant remains in the head into the block as you pull it out.

Good luck

Kevin

He says its not necesary to remove intake manifold to change lifters, so Im just wondering if anyone else has done so. I guess it would be easier with the engine out though, easier to get at everything. I just kinda want to avoid pullin' 'er out, as i dont have the necesary tools to do so. Or an adequate place to work.

You don't need to pull the engine to change lifters. just remove valve covers and intake manifold..... no to bad of a job, but as mentioned, get help lifting the intake....

Ok, Gotchya,
So you recomend I take off intake mani. I will do that then if its much harder to get at without removing it.
Thabnks for the good word.

I think it's the right thing to do. The only tricky part will be getting it lifted, it's easily 80lbs.

Read up on gaskets, as you need to take a little care when reassembling everything. I used Felpro metal sandwich gaskets along with some high temp sealant. You don't want to have coolant or exhaust leaking from the manifold into either the cylinders or block. The inlet manifold has exhaust and coolant running through it.

I made sure to leave mine to set for a while before running the engine, it seemed to work just fine.

Good luck

Kevin

My engine was pretty worn and I couldn't get all the lifters out because they had mushroomed. I had the engine out to rebuild anyway, so after the cam was out I just popped them out the other way.

Pulling lifters out with the intake in isn't that bad with a telescoping magnet and a screwdriver and a person holding a flashlight for you. I'd rather do lifters this way again over pulling the boat anchor off the top of an FE.

Ok, beauty So you have done this that way before. And you dsay it wasnt that bad, and that you;d rather do it that way again rather that pull that sucker off.
Thats probly enough to convince me to do it that way, Also the situation im in helps that decision.
I moved into a townhouse begining of july, and the strata bylaws are a bunch o' _____ . One of them is , no vehicle repairs in parking lot. I also have to park in the visiting spots. My driveway is a steep short hill and I cannot fit my truck in the garage.
Good stuff.

If all of the pushrods are turning, I'd hesitate to replace all the lifters. Try to pick the one(s) making noise by idling at the slowest idle possible, rocker covers off, push down on the pushrod side of each rocker to increase the clatter(collapse lifter a little) and let if up to allow it to take up the slack. The ones that don't quiet down may need to be removed and cleaned... They're not worn as they still rotate the pushrods. Always replace the lifter in the hole from which it was removed, it wears into its particular cam lobe... tom

you can also go on to harbor freight.com and buy a tool called a lifter puller it kind of looks like needle nose pliers they are long and skinny and you just put it under the little wire clips spread it out and pull up takes 5 seconds to pull one out with that tool and it is only a few bucks. good luck
