After I posted that reply, I did some research and found out what it was.
Thanks for all the info, that is what is great about this site, you guys will offer up suggestions to possibly save from having to go back in or redue something. I am not afraid to try and fix anything, I just dont have the experience on the diesel engines. I have learned alot on here and have alot more to learn.
Thanks again for all the help. I will keep you posted on the progress.
My van has just passed 248000 miles.
It's rattling and shaking, but still running.
I tried to record a video, but the loud sounds from the motor made the sound almost disappear in the recording. Or could it be the frequenzy of the turbo that cancels the sound.
I used a cheap china dash camera, which maybe explains it.
Will try my wifes JVC camera one day.
to piggyback on this discussion - as I know the harmonic balancer is bad on the engine i'll be rebuilding/refreshing soon: how about doing the LPOP at 200k?
if i'm doing the harmonic balancer then, should I do the LPOP as well at that time? i think i have to do the crank seals (front and rear) as well, so it sounds like i'll have to take the pump off to do that anyway, right? might as well replace while its off?
Crank seal installed, used a 3" water fitting as a driver. Balancer on, went on easy with the install tool from Autozone. Had to make a spacer, the nut that you use to drive the balancer on went up inside and could not be reached even with a deep well socket.
Now need some fittings and bolts to mount new IH water pump, flush, and add new coolant.
thanks for the pics, Randy - I've been curious what the inside of those things looked like. i'm also curious what makes them go bad? seems like most times they last forever, other times, they die at a 'mere' 100k miles or so (I still love that 100k miles is nothing on these trucks).
and thanks for the input guys - i'm pretty sure the balancer was bad on the engine in my red truck, and now that its getting yanked and rebuilt, its time to replace it - and everything behind it!
No Idea what makes one go bad, probably a defective part. When I put a water pump on my other truck at 160000 I didnt notice anything wrong with that balancer. Cant say I actually looked it over good, but it should have been obvious like this one.
I would definitely at least pull it to put a new crank seal and check the lpop. If it has a lot of miles, it wouldnt hurt to go ahead and put a new balancer on.
I hope this did not do any damage, hopefully it hasnt been that way too long. When I got the truck it had 92000, now 103000. Not bad for 5 years. This one is my baby.
