got a bit of a problem with my headlights- they "flicker" out on me, so I quickly shut off the lights and back on again- then they work for a bit- both lights go out at the same time- was wondering if something in the switch behind the dash could cause this- have tried, but I cannot seem to get the **** off of the headlight shaft, followed the instructions in the repair manual (screwdriver pushing in the little slot) - also removed/cleaned/re-installed the connectors to the headlights themselves - any suggestions??
Don't know if it'll helpl, but I had a '72 Gran Torino wagon that would the same thing. I could slam the brakes to make the lights come back on for a little bit. It did like you describe, but gradually got worse. I had to replace the headlight switch.
Had the same problem w/87 BII. Replaced switch (yep, it's kinda tricky getting that release to actually release!). Also found wiring to switch was very burnt/corroded, so replaced a few of the high amperage connectors. Still didn't solve problem. Opened the steering column to get to the dimmer switch - connectors there were also burnt and corroded. Replaced the burnt ones - all better!
k- I bought the switch- tore out the old one- yup- the connector was burnt - as per the advise that the ford dealer gave me- soldered in the new one- it works! now to figure out how to replace the tranny switch- the one that tells you when yr in 4x or 2x .......
That ones located on the transfer case. If you've got a manual shift transfer case, it should be easy to find. If an electric shift, it could be a bit tougher.
